Giulia demands more government support for shopkeepers

In most parts of the world shopkeepers can be seen cleaning up the areas outside their own shops because it’s a smart thing to do. (And the right thing to do considering the messes are made at least in part by their customers)

Here in Canberra we roll a bit different and so today the Liberals’ Giulia Jones is calling for more to be spent by the Government on further propping up the local shops:

Newly appointed Canberra Liberal MLA, Giulia Jones, will be addressing the Assembly tomorrow, Wednesday 20 March 2013, to call on the Minister for Territory and Municipal Services to explain why local shopping centres throughout Canberra have been neglected and to move a motion for the Assembly to take action in improving the maintenance of local shops.

“Our local shopping centres in Canberra are deteriorating, particularly in the areas of cleanliness, parking, access, lighting and safety,” Mrs Jones said.

Despite repeated assurances from the Labor Government that issues at local shops are being address, the state of many local shops in Canberra remains unsatisfactory.

“Local shops are the heart of the Canberra community. Local shops need to meet the basic needs and services required by residents in their area. Local shops provide support and a sense of community, particularly modern mothers who have so much to fit into the day. ”

“There are vacancies at local shops which leave residents in the local area, leaving opportunities for graffiti and bird waste. Everyone is busy these days with work, children, and other commitments. We all rely on the local shops to help them get through the week.”

Won’t someone think of the modern mothers?

“We all rely on the local shops to help them get through the week.”

talk about poor proof reading as others have said.

does Giulia mean that the shops rely on customers to make money, or do the customers rely on the local shop to make sure they are still living at the end of the week!?!

What local shops? ours left in about 1994 and never came back layed abandoned for years and suddenly had apartments built on their graves.

Wouldn’t this have made more sense coming after tomorrow.. as then we’d have found out what the response was?

“Won’t someone think of the modern mothers?”

Modern mothers are at work johnnyboy while the husbands look after their kids and flirt with the deli lady and dealing with the bird waste issue.

As a Canberrian its obvious most people goto the town centre to do the groceries. Everyone gets over charged at the local centres and they aren’t as cool.

The main thing they should change about smaller business in Canberra is the opening hours and life of the city. Canberra is dead at night in all places but civic on certain days of the week. (Mind you that might change seeing as they’re trying to destroy Bunda street)

My word of the week is “imbecile”, and I’m going to apply it Ms. Jones. Upon further reflection, I think I’ll apply it to her crew as well. Ms Jones and her staff are imbeciles.

It’s difficult to believe that one of our local politicians, with all the resources they have at their disposal, is not able to write and promulgate a couple of coherent paragraphs of simple English prose. Were they all drunk when this gem was produced?

I’m starting to think I should have a shot at a political gig. The fact that someone so evidently lacking in competence or intelligent ideas can coast along in the Assembly on a fat salary is a sad indictment on the operation of our political system.

Mums in the past didn’t work/Uni/etc, it was just like that.

These days many of them do.

Busier.

Nonsense. Some mums certainly studied and worked.

Some mums now don’t work, some do.

This notion that everyone is busier than they’ve ever been is poppycock. Most people have have more leisure time now than at any point in the past. People think they’re ‘busier’ because they’re trying to pack more and more into the free time they have.

At least we know she’s still alive.

I thought she might have dropped off the end of the earth.

Or so they would have us think. We are constantly told about “busy mums”. If they’re so “busy”, how is it that they drive their kids to and from school? When I was young, we caught buses if we were out of area. You only got a ride from your mother or father if you had to get to after school activities and buses wouldn’t work.

But they certainly are busy telling us how terribly busy they are.

I’m not…

Guilia believes that because she is a female that she is on the side of females and able to speak on their behalf, unlike the long-dead Victorian or Edwardian ones or something.

And what of the poor modern fathers who themselves will also have to navigate this shopping centre detritus?

Perhaps TAMS should pull their fingers out and clean it up – not that I have seen these areas covered in bird excrement and graffiti.

Having said that, if you exit out of the side of our local shopping centre, what you will see if loads of cigarette butts handily placed there by the ‘fresh food people’ whilst on their breaks. This is clearly the responsibility of ‘the fresh food people’ and not TAMS and it gives me the s***s to have to run the gauntlet through their disgusting smoke and know that they are too lazy to clean up after themselves.

I think it means “issues at local shops are not being address“.

How is that comment patronising?

It’s certainly fatuous. Another one of those ‘it’s never been so bad’ statements based on nothing more than the vague belief that things are terrible … not like ‘the good old days’.

I would have thought it would be pretty damn busy having to do all the child-rearing as well as all the cooking and cleaning without modern appliances or male assistance.

Mums these days are generally busier than mums of generations past

How is that comment patronising?

I’m a mother AND I love my local shops and I feel thoroughly patronised by that modern mothers comment.

“There are vacancies at local shops which leave residents in the local area, leaving opportunities for graffiti and bird waste” … wtf does that even mean?!

Good god that’s poorly written!

My favourite part is in the last paragraph – apparently vacancies at local shops leave opportunities for bird waste. Part of me doesn’t want to argue with that, it’s just such a fabulous statement.

‘Modern mothers’ sounds rude, somehow…

Either that or fatuous.

Woah, obviously Giulia is not familiar with the concept of proofreading.
