ACT Policing is appealing for further witnesses to an assault in Wanniassa on Thursday evening (February 17).

At around 11.00pm a male was assaulted outside the Maram Nightclub, Wanniassa, when another male is alleged to have thrown a glass at the victim’s head and assaulted him.

Witness reports indicate that there were two groups of people in the nightclub around 11pm. There was a verbal exchange between the two groups – one group then moved outside to the front of the nightclub. The offender followed the group outside and threw a glass at the victim resulting in facial injuries.

The victim is in a stable condition in Canberra Hospital.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the altercation or have any information which led up to these incidents to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information to Crime Stoppers may be provided anonymously.

It shouldn’t be given a name. The name seems to make it somehow legitimate, somehow less than it really is.

Let’s call it what it is: a vicious assault likely to maim and disfigure a person for life.

All the way with GA on this.

It’s appalling that this happens often enough to even have a name. I think the media folks who report this should just refer it to as “assault with a broken bottle/beer glass/whatever”.

To add a little human interest aspect to my views, my now ex-wife assaulted me with a wine glass while in a drunken fury back around ’97, before it was called glassing. I bled like a stuck pig, it hurt like a bastard and the scar is still visible.

It’s no fun at all for the people on the receiving end.

Who needs to be out drinking in Wanniassa (or anywhere else) at 11pm?

I can’t believe someone said that.

Should be tucked up in bed with a cup of cocoa watching repeats of the Bill perhaps?

Hey, those angry letters to the editor aren’t going to write themselves.

Because you wouldn’t mean other people shouldn’t?

I was at the hospital during a time a young bloke with a glassed eye came in. He was visited by another tall tattooed guy that looked, smelt and sounded rather (make that VERY) affected by grog.

How’d they get the glass outside? Aren’t there bounces in these places?

That was my first thought. I have been to Maram quite a few times and they have large, burly, bouncers. The seem to be there pretty early too – I have seen them there from 6pm so I can’t understand how this hapenned.

Sounds like stunt orchestrated by the Maram’s marketing department for some free advertising. They’re clever like that.

It’s certainly worked. I’d never heard about them before this post.
