Glassworks opening delayed

The Chief Minister has put out a media release trying to make the best out of cost overruns and delays with his treasured glassworks conversion of the old Kingston power station.

“While a December 2006 completion date was originally proposed, the recent discovery that the building’s 90-year-old roof needed additional work had made a birthday grand opening a more sensible option”

The Birthday in question is Canberra Day 2007.

or cut/paste those links into word.

Meh what a waste of time – just go to my crappy old website – http://www.angelfire.com/goth/abramelech

I give up.

Anywho… to save JB from my constant innundations of photos – I have added imbedded links to this post.

I had a quick scout at home and have not been able to find said negatives for Kingo PS – but will ask my friends who still live in Lyons of they have seen them as well.

I have included Yarralumla Brickwors as well as that is another canberra institution thats heritage listed – and in my books – worthy of note.

These photos are all about 3 to 5 years old and shot on 35mm ilford 100 – the website they are coming from no longer felects who I am as an individual ( if you have a look around 😛 )

Apoligies in advance if the embedded links dont work – as we all know edit function is not an option.

Anywho… here goes.

Roof Detail on Kingston Power Station
Steam Whistle on roof
Sheer pit behind Chainlink (Note SRV was not in attendance at the time)
Hardy Patent Fan Houses @ Yarralumla Brickworks
Raw Material Hoppers @ Yarralumla Brickworks
Conveyor @ Yarralumla Brickworks
Kiln in Negative Art @ Yarralumla Brickworks

blueboard and render

that seems to be the building material of choice these days.

All 35mm b+w – will have to scan on my trusty film scanner – after I find them – I have some digitised already – but I seem to remember loosing a lot of my b+w negs when i moved from lyons – and they were all yarralumla brickwoks and Kingo PS – besides JB is already inundated by my constant Image Of Canberra photos.

Send your photos in Danman with comentry and we’ll (well JB – nice of me to volunteer his services) put it up as part of the images of Canberra series.

This building is heritage listed a well.
In keeping with that – you are allowed to refurbish the interior – but the exterior facade roof etc etc jhas to remain as original – not sure if it can be restored to original – I dont see why not.

I am quite keen to see inside the building nowdays as about 3 years ago I had a guided tour around the facility with a guy from teh foreshore authority and got plenty of good pictures.

At one spot there was a chainlink fence inside – around a sheer drop that was a pit that contained oil and crap – but was originally used to pump water in from molonglo river to cool the facility.

On the 2nd level there was huge square holes in teh floor were the generators had been removed – but looking up – all teh coal loaders ( similar to the one on the rear of th ebuilding ) were still intact.

Down in the guts – beneath the coal fire pits – was a dark dingy room were a guy in a leather apron shoveled hoy ash oout from below the coal fires all day, and people complain about hard work today.

There used to be a stack as well – on the western side between the station and the bus depot markets – but its gone now – the only remaining part is teh red brick stack “base”

Of particular note is a little swimming area that used to be near a weir on molonglo river near the power station.

It was quite popular for the fact that the station pumped its warm water (from the cooling process) back into the lake at this spot.

Plenty of photos of this place (vintage era) can be found via http://www.naa.gov.au (look for the photosearch function.)

Like I said – I love this building – will be good to see it in its new incarnation.
