Good live music in Canberra?

I have recently started a new job in the graduate program within a government department and a lot of my new colleagues are from out of town. They have been asking me where the best places in Canberra are for live music, but not being very “in touch” with the local music scene, I haven’t been able to give them an answer.

So, where should I send them on their quest to satisfy their musical hunger? The only parameter, as far as I can tell, is that they are more keen on bands than DJ’s. Also, they all seem to be allergic to travelling further south than Narrabundah.

Cheers!

Check our Digress in the city – cool band starting there soon!

The Marum took over from the Green room in Phillip

It was fantastic and got some top quality local, interstate bands, but all things come to an end, and it could not continue with crowds of 20 to bands such as Hungary kids Of Hungary. Hoodoos always went off!

So doesn’t do the live gigs anymore.

ANU Bar and UC still have great bands from time to time.

For Canberra-specific stuff and beatniks – Phoenix, The Front, Pot Belly

National bands (i.e. Regurgitator, Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus et al) – ANU, but of increasing importance without the Green Room is the Maram and now UC’s Zierholz

Metal, metal and more metal – The Basement in Belco

DJ’s – Transit Bar (yes, I know you said no DJ’s)

I’ve also seen (in the last few years) a couple of my lifelong heroes, Paul Kelly and Alice Cooper play at the theatre. Music in Canberra is alive and well, it’s just an inevitable pity that we’re between Sydney and Melbourne and thus get a lot of mid-week gigs.

I live a stones throw away from The Maram. I’ve never been there, but from the outside it doesn’t appear to be the classiest of venues.

+1 to the Front .. it has great music and a completely different ambience to the Pheonix

Also The Front in Lyneham, Transit on Akuna Street in Civic, the Pot Belly and The Basement in Belconnen.

And if they’re feeling super brave the Maram in Erindale.

The Phoenix!
East Row in Civic

Original live music 4 or 5 nights a week, great atmosphere and friendly crowd.
