Good live music venues in Canberra

Hi all,

My friend and his band (Sydney-based) are starting to look at touring regionally. I was wondering if anyone might be able to give me some recommendations to give to them about possible venues they could play at in Canberra. To help match music to venue, this is their Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/mozaiktunes.

Appreciate any thoughts people might have. Thanks!

Thanks Fender. I’ll pass that info on too.

Best be is to contact Cardboard Charlie (Ben) and get into the Phoenix of the Transit on a Monday. No pay for the band though. The Basement is pay to play and usually only metal flavours so rule that one out. Clubs are cover or duos so rule that one out too. Without being able to draw, a venue owner has no reason to hire an original band. Just the way it is.

That’s great, thanks everyone – I’ll pass these on (plus the feedback on their acoustic stuff).

The acoustic stuff they have on the myspace page is awesome. I reckon The Phoenix would be worth a try (as already mentioned).

Without getting into the sad state of music venues in Canberra and without being able to check out their sound my suggestions/opinions are:

If there heavy – The Basement in Belco
If there rock – The Marim (sp?) in Erindale
If there folky – The Phoenix in Civic
Transit is good for more dub/dj/pop stuff
King O’Malleys (and the other pubs) are only good for cover bands and not original music
Then there is the youth centres if they want an all ages show (Woden being my pick)

The Basement and the Pot Belly in Belconnen both have live bands.

Give these guys a go:

The Phoenix
Transit Bar
The Front (in Lyneham)
King O’Malley’s Pub

I reckon Transit is probably your best bet.
