Good nightclub venues to go for the over 30's?

I am a mid 30’s lady, semi-professional, with some class, who is trying to find alternate venues to hit the town on Fri/Sat nights. I don’t mind a lot of places, but the problem is that a lot of my friends, especially males, don’t know a lot of the newer music that most night spots tend to play. I do, as I have teen and pre-teen kids 🙂 We usually hit O’Malleys, live bands are good and play an assortment of older and well known stuff, and there is the new music put on during the band’s breaks and after the band finishes, which gives me the best of both worlds.

But good old O’Malleys is just becoming way too crowded as of late and that again would not be too liked by some of my other friends.

So any suggestions on where to go where we wouldn’t be seen as ‘oldies invading youngen’s’ hangouts and looking totally out of place, yet which plays a good mix of some older and newer stuff, and must have a dance floor!!

I’m in my mid thirties and going out dancing isn’t my thing any more, but hell, if someone wants to go out and bust a move, who’s it hurting?

Crikey! what’s wrong with going out for dancing in your thirties, how about fifties, can they go to these places and fit in with the crowd?

Lately I’m finding it hard to leave Franklin Street. There’s free pool and funky music at Felt and the Julep Lounge has just reopened as Tulip and always has good music coming down the stairs in the evenings.

Kingston also has a few bars and pubs to explore, if you do the loop of the shops you’re bound to find something to your liking. Don’t go to Kennedy Room with silver skin. 😉

I really like the George Harcourt Hotel in Nicholls. Its been dramatically revamped in the last two years.

You have to be joking. It was better before they renovated, even then I would still rather drink at an AA meeting.

Surely there’s room here for a smart-arse comment about Swinger Hill?

Depend’s what type of club you are looking for, do you want to sit down and drink, do you want to dance, do you want to have a beer garden??

Speaking unilaterally and without consultation on behalf of the 30-something male population (and LoveBumps)… we’re looking for whatever the 20-or-30-something females are looking for.

Ohhh right, now I get ya.

Tongue and Groove, that’s where they go…

The question is why someone in their mid-thirties with almost grown kids feels the need to go clubbing…

The answer is “because she does”. Beleive it or not Jethro, people over thirty still like to have fun.

Sorry but Canberra’s too small a market to provide what you’re after. Bobby McGees had it spot on in the mid to late 90’s but today, forget it.

Ohh right… People with kids should be locked up inside and not be able to come out and have fun when other people are…

Stay away from the dodgy ones, Krave, Meche, Bar 32, Mercury Bar and The Phoenix and the rest should be accommodating. PJ’s in the City and Muddle Bar have some good clientele, Ha Ha Bar in Belconnen, then some of the sports clubs do a pretty good job at entertaining after midnight.

I can see why you asked the question – in a couple of years’ time you don’t want to be frequenting the same nightclubs as your kids! : )

Couple of years time? What do you reckon the kids are doing whilst mum is out clubbing.

Just because someone is a certain age or has kids shouldn’t exclude them from wanting to have a night out dancing with their friends. For the record, I’m single and don’t have kids and have just entered my 30s, but I don’t see why someone’s age or family situation should preclude or exclude them from going out to have a dance. If I get to a certain age does that mean I should be expected to find other forms of entertainment, even though I love to dance?

Jellybean, I’m glad you posted this question, because it’s actually something I’ve been wondering as well – O’Malleys has been my default ‘go to’ place but it would be nice to know of other venues. I’ve only been to the Kennedy Rooms for dinner (and the food is quite good), but the crowd seems a bit more…concerned, for want of a better word, about their appearance than those who frequent O’Malleys. If that makes sense. Even going there for dinner I feel like I have to put in more effort with my appearance than I would going to other places. Which is fine, and I like to doll up every now and then, but it may be something you want to take into consideration if you’re looking for somewhere with the same vibe as O’Malleys.

Others who’ve recommended Galaxy – is there a cover charge?

I fail to see the appeal of The Kennedy Room, but Knightsbridge is pretty cool. At least it has an identity.

Perhaps the Kennedy Room might be something you are interested in… http://www.thekennedyroom.com/
They seem to have an older crowd, by that I mean over 21 years old. Play some funky music and attract lots of people…

@johnboy – I thought Galaxy was 80’s music only? Have heard of debacle but never been there, and have never heard of Knightsbridge – will have to look that one up. Thanks.

Galaxy nightclub in the casino is aimed pretty much right at you.

Knightsbridge penthouse in braddon, and debacle might also work.
