Maestral is way too noisy for me. Food is great and staff very friendly though.

Well, go to Maestral, beleive me it is a great place, food,service,atmosfere..I went with my family few times and we just love it. I think its croatian style. Excellent place!!!

If all else fails what about the old fashion picnic. Isn’t it about the two of you being together more than the food? Anyway it’s worked for me in the past.

Thanks for all the responses guys… I will have to ask cryptic questions to the boy to find out what he likes.

Macca’s then to the poolhall under the indoor cricket arena, can’t beat that for romance 🙂

Nah… My’s and maestral are both excellent

Too true wishuwell. I’ve been there a few times and always had an enjoyable meal. Dining enjoyment is a very subjective experience.

“A Bit to Eat”

A Freudian slip perhaps?

My last experiences with A Bit to Eat have not been too possitive. Only because it has been booked out or closed.

Maybe bad timing, maybe just plain unlucky. Unfortunately experiences either good or bad stick. Of course all are welcome to convince me that I may possibly have been too harsh.

Shannski,

Is Torrens too far out of the way? Pinnochio’s is *excellent*.

What do you mean wishuwell? What happened? I’ve always found A Bite To Eat pretty good, and we’ve been there a fair few times now.

As much as I tried to support A Bite to Eat (I really tried) how many chances is the accepted norm in the food business. Seemed easier to choose from the menu pay immediately leave immediately and avoid any further dissappointment . Less painful.

A Bite to Eat at the Chifley shops is pretty damn good.

“They have also changed that, they are trying to discourage ‘families’ and make it into a upmarket place”

Last time we ate-in at Brierly’s we had our daughter in tow – then aged 2y10m. Doesn’t sound like we’ll be going there again.

I agree that Mys and Thai House are the pick of the crop in Weston ATM.

Tho if you go to Mys check the adding up on your bill – they tried to overcharge me more than $10 on takeaway last week because the girl typed so fast on the calculator it registered $15 for rice instead of $1.50. She looked at me like I had two heads when I asked her to check the amount – perhaps she thought that nearly $40 for one main course, one entree and rice was reasonable!?

“The room atmosphere lit intimately after dark but if you have a couple of people in there it is loud and if you want a quiet romantic meal then it can be terrible. It is not a restaurant for a quiet conversation.”

They have also changed that, they are trying to discourage ‘families’ and make it into a upmarket place, hence the pizzas sizes gone.

There is a big rug in there now that drains out the noise.

“Don’t waste your time ordering a small pizza for one; they are kind of small, better to go one size up.”

The menu has changed again, so have the staff, you can no longer get different size pizzas, all pizzas are plate size and are plenty big enough.

Oh my god! You can still do that?! When I read the title of this, the only place I could think of was the Thai House at Coolamon or wherever the hell it is.

Back in the 80s (I think) when it first opened, I mean literally, it was a week old or something, someone in the ANU hockey club said we should go there as it was awesome, so about 30 of us did. With an esky full of beer (a very large esky).

well, the service was having problems, so 2 hours after ordering we were stilll waiting, and getting pisster and pisster. Someone at one end wanted a beer, so the holder of the esky got one and pitched it to them. Whereupon a feirce old Thai lady came and remonstrated with him in no uncertain terms! Upbraided is the army term.

Anyway, when the food appeared, it was stunning. Thai was still new then, and the flavours amazed us. But the memory of that beer can flying through the air, and that enraged Thai lady are with me today.

brierleys on Brierley Street was great….. 6 months ago, THEN they changed the menu, added $5 to everything and now have kids doing the service.

I was going to write a review after my first visit but after the last time I was there I thought, why bother? But now someone has asked about Weston. So…

Last time I was at brierleys, they brought side dishes of chips to tables next to me AFTER the main meals had been cleared. I thought that the first time might have been stuff up but then it happened again. The father of one table had to explain to the waitress that he ordered the chips as a “side dish” not as dessert and then had the hassle of explaining that he was not going to pay for it. The chips arrived at the other table at the same time as the coffee order was being taken.

I have to say that the food is good quality prepared well. You get a large serve if you order any of the pasta dishes (but remember that you get what you order and if you order a steak and you want a salad, vegies or chips, it’s extra for each side). The garlic foccasia is huge for 2 but stays the same size if you have a table of 2 or 12. Don’t waste your time ordering a small pizza for one; they are kind of small, better to go one size up.

The room atmosphere lit intimately after dark but if you have a couple of people in there it is loud and if you want a quiet romantic meal then it can be terrible. It is not a restaurant for a quiet conversation.

The service compares to McDonalds. When you are paying that money for your food, you don’t need V.S.O.P. service but I’m used to having the menu explained to me. . not me explaining it to the waitress.

Thai House : one of my fav Canberra restaurants – I’ll even drive over from Belconnen just to eat there.

Tis a lucky man ; )

He drinks, i buy them for him! And im happy with that, as i get to take advantage of him.. 😉

I dont drink though, more then happy to let him have my share though

(Thumper – you almost got yourself in trouble there : P)

Yeah, guys, happy anniversary. Drink up!

brierleys on brierley street at Coolo is suberb, pretty high standard cuisine and atmosphere

Delissio in Curtin is good, and if you live in a certain part of Weston you can drive right under the parkway.

friggin no carriage to get home… mutter grumble grumble mutter, kick stuff mutter mutter…

No carriage! Bugger, I wont be making it home afterall…

Just dont take him home in a carriage – apparently the cops don’t like it.

“but”

oh for crying out loud I’m hopeless. I’m going home : P

Oh and driving counts as carrying too “carrying in your car”.

There’s a bit of help from the engine buy we buys cars for that added advantage.

“he”, baaahhh! Humbug.

Where’s it say that his didn’t supply a wheel barrow?

You still have to carry someone in a wheel barrow, it’s just a bit less awkward.

Now, if you replace the word “he” with “we” to read…
I dont want to go too far out of Weston though, as we will most likely be getting drunk, and i dont want to carry him home.

…you suddenly start generating my sympathy and respect as a researching, boozy, reasonable modern woman.
But he makes you carry him home instead of either paying for the taxi or providing you with a wheelbarrow to push him home in.
Tut tut…

I still say go wherever you like (but avoid the Thai place near Effective People (River Kwai?) like the plague) if its your shout and not his birthday.

A gal who does some research, pays for dinner, has a sense of humor and still respects that she wants to eat within walking distance so she can drink too.

geez, I’d be an unlucky man

You’re a modern woman.
If you’re buying, you can eat wherever you like.
If you want to eat at Telstra Tower, eat at Telstra Tower.
If you want chinese from Sammy’s, eat at Sammy’s.
If he drinks so much he can’t walk back to the car, start living up to the uncaring girlfriend tag amd leave him there to deal with it.

Anniversary, girlfriend …. …. …. (that really does make me speechless)

Since your buying, go where you want to eat.

It doesn’t matter where he gets pissed, all you have to do is put him in the car, so you may as well eat in civic.

maelinar – He may be… But that doesn’t mean i cant treat him to a nice meal! I am a caring girlfriend, no matter what he says!

Try ‘My’ (Vietnamese)

Its really just your anniversary celebration isn’t it ?

I think your partner is whipped.

Growling Ferret3:52 pm 22 Jan 08

If he is getting toasted, go to the Thai House and take an esky. No charge if you bring and drink your own stubbies and keep them cold

If you’re going as far as Woden you can’t go past Bellucci’s (opposite the ice skating rink). But if you’re staying in Weston, avoid the Thai place opposite the post office.

Maestral is nice food but yeah, a bit pricey. I’d say the new pizza and pasta place would be nice and laid back for a few drinks with dinner – although it’s always shut when I go to eat there so can’t be sure.

Otherwise, the upstairs Thai place behind Flight Centre. That’s nice and quiet for an occasion.

The new(ish) Lemon Grass at Phillip.

Maestral! Best Steak and Seafood ever. Not cheap but very high quality.
