Got busted for speeding in NSW? You'll also lose points off your ACT license now!

I’ve just had it confirmed by ACT Chief Police Officer – via Twitter that if you lose drivers license points in NSW now, they’ll also come off your ACT license points as well.

Hopefully it’ll make some ACT drivers think twice before doing their Mark Webber impersonations on the Hume Highway this weekend…

Was just out around the Cowra / Bathurst area over the long weekend and saw regular police patrols with mobile radars fitted, both on open roads and within towns. Phew what a relief to get back across the border into ACT this afternoon and onto Gunghalin Drive / Tuggie Pkwy where you know you don’t need to worry about silly things like speed limits. Home sweet home.

I feel ripped off. I’ve never had points from NSW offences slip through the cracks in the last 9 years. (I’ve done a reasonably comprehensive study with plenty of data sets too).

It’s “meant” to have been the case for quite some time now (many years). And the police will certainly tell you that (since as far as they’re concerned, that is indeed the case). The reality is that the administration of it doesn’t always keep up with what’s “meant” to happen.
I’m not suggesting you should rely on it not happening, and I’m certainly not advocating any kind of driving that would incur you points – quite the opposite. I’m just saying don’t be too surprised if points incurred in NSW still slip through the cracks.

This is definitely a happening thing people. If you wan’t confirmation, ring the police or send a tweet to @CPOACT and he will confirm it for you.

It used to be the case up until about 5-6 years ago. Then NSW changed the penalties, or some such thing. The ACT decided not to recognise them, so it stopped. It meant that someone disqualified from driving in NSW could, quite legally, drive in the ACT and elsewhere in Australia on a valid licence.

Don’t do it then.

hasn’t that been the case for the last few years? I seem to recall it coming into being Australia wide some time back.

Hasn’t this been supposed to happen for many years? Have they actually improved communication between NSW & ACT or are they just saying it is still supposed to happen?

You can ring Road User Services and ask. They’re normally pretty friendly about it. Yes, I’ve rung them a few times when I thought I might have been done by a speed camera and not received the notice.

is there anywhere you can check your current points tally – I believe some States you can do this?
