Territory and Municipal Services have felt moved to let you all know how to get up in the mountains without endangering yourselves or others:

“Many local families want to experience the snow first hand. Unfortunately our unsealed rural roads aren’t designed to take the large volumes of traffic during the snow season.

“The Corin Forest Mountain Recreation area is the best and safest opportunity for Canberrans to enjoy the snow and we strongly encourage people to travel to this location instead of recreation areas accessed by Brindabella Road or Boboyan Road.

“For experienced visitors heading further into Namadgi, emergency beacons (Emergency Position Indicator Radio Beacons – EPIRBS) are available for hire from the Namadgi Visitor’s Centre,” Mr Alegria said.

If you’re not a family, you’re presumably in bed recovering from a night spent snorting cocaine and dancing until 5am trying to pick up ugly strangers for casual sex and therefore not likely to be heading out to play in the snow.

Ahhh, thanks for bringing back the memories, Henry… Of course, it’s more likely I was the ugly stranger 🙂

Why do I suddenly feel ill?

You’re coming down?

Flashbacks?

Unless you define “family” in some narrow formulaic way which ignores people outside the “heteronsexual couple + 2.3 offspring” model. In which case you are probably a sociopath.
.

A “family” isn’t two or more random people who happen to share a bit of genetic material.
A “family” is a adult pair and their offspring.

I don’t – if he doesn’t like “families”, the basic building-block of society, then he’s probably a sociopath.

Every person with even one single living relative is part of a family. Even without one single living relative they used to be part of a family. So the tag is meaningless. Unless you define “family” in some narrow formulaic way which ignores people outside the “heteronsexual couple + 2.3 offspring” model. In which case you are probably a sociopath.

And “working families” suggests anyone without a paid job (or supported by a “family member” with one) is some sort of dole bludging communist who needs to get off their arse.

Yeah, but boy does that road turn into a good slip-and-slide by 3pm when you’re on your way home in your Commodore stationwagon.

True, although in all but the worst times that road it doable in 2WD (if conditions are driven to – which they most often aren’t, but hey, that applies to Corin Rd equally).

Did laugh one winter when watching one landcruiser trying to pull another landcruiser out from quite shallow mud right on the edge of the road….

So if you’re not a family, stop reading now, we’re not talking to you.

What if you went around to such publications or utterances and replaced “families” with “retirees”, “Pensioners”, “students”, “single people”, or “couples”. It would render the statements clearly targetted. So why do they use “families” as some kind of replacement word for “People”?

I prefer to replace the word “families” in these with a randomly selected food. Pineapple for example, or cheese.

Makes reading media released about Working Pineapples™ or Local Cheese™ much more enjoyable (and arguably no less nonsensical).

I like your thinking.

I don’t – if he doesn’t like “families”, the basic building-block of society, then he’s probably a sociopath.

There I was thinking people were the building-blocks of society.

No, they’re not, presumably because they know who they’ve had to pull out of ditches in the past.

Telling people to go to the “safest” opportunity at Corin is damn stupid. That road is sub par, the actual snow area cramped, and no mobile reception anyway.

+1

The only, single, thing I can think of that makes Corin Forest “better” then Piccadilly Circus, and Bulls Head is that the road is sealed all the way. Brindabella Rd is wider, less bendy and closer to people on the north side of the city.

Brindabellas are a far better experience, and they should be investing in the areas, along with ensuring people go prepared. But this government are cheapskates unless it’s “art.” Is discouraging people really going to stop people, they just make it more dangerous trying to ignore it and discouraging people.

That said, people shouldn’t be blasé about the dangers. They probably target families because they’re the ones who may listen, and who go up there often. Certainly it’s usually families when I’ve been up there. And there is a danger: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Kim#Snowbound

Slight correction. They are not EPIRBs They are PLBs Personal Locating Beacons This is one I have its the size of a small mobile phone you can get them at Mountain Designs

EPIRBs are bigger and are used Offshore and they float upright in the water like this one

My assumption is that it’s got something to do with spin doctors.

If you dont have kids you can (a) afford and (b) have the time to go to the real snow.
