GP Recommendations on the Southside?

Hi Rioters,

So I know this topic comes us quite often but there doesnt seem to be any recent chats on GP recommendations for the Southside of Canberra…..

My husband and I currently go to different GP clinics as the books at mine are ALWAYS closed! Im due to give birth in a few weeks and want us all to be able to go to the one clinic for ease/logistics etc (i know, how unreasonable of me!). Especially because i have been told at my current centre there is no guarentee that I’ll even be able to get an appointment for the baby there after its born which I think is completely unreasonable…. 🙁

So any recommendations of good doctors; one that will listen to your concern and not shove you out the door, AND have their books open?

Thanks!

Well congrats and all that. Gordon Valley is a great surgery. We have been with them for 10 years. Tried others in that time but never as good.

Thank you Madam Cholet!

Tuggeranong Square Medical- I have always managed to get an appointment within a few hours. Open weekends too. They have an iPhone app (docappointments) so you can book via the app and see which doctor is available when.

I was a little unsure about them as I thought they might be the type of place people walk into when they need a certificate for a cold, but not the type of place for more serious stuff and where you can have an ongoing relationship with one doctor. However it seems a few people have recommended them, so maybe I’m wrong!

I need to see a doctor regarding the early stages of pregnancy and “what do I do now” kind of thing. I don’t have a regular GP as I don’t really get sick, but obviously I’d like one now. Gordon Valley is looking good. Any other suggestions on the Southside?

To the person posing about warding off vampires…I mean flu with garlic. I agree that garlic and ginger are great for maintaining health – I didn’t have a cold in three years before my son came along which I put down to our very regular consumption of curries made from scratch, but I would have to say that I don’t believe you can get rid of flu in 48 hours by eating a few cloves. Maybe you just had a cold? The number of people who mistake a cold for flu is ridiculous. If everyone had the flu every time they got a sniffle, no one would be at work.

It’s extraordinary how many people say they’ve got the influenza virus when in reality it’s just a common cold virus which, while uncomfortable, is nowhere near as debilitating as the flu virus. The fact that up to half a million people worldwide die from contracting influenza is testament to that.

Dear Canberrans,

I wish to share virus and flu tips (natural) for anyone who is totally unaware of the effective expulsion within 24hrs to 48 hours of the flu. I have been using these remedies for well over 20 years successfully;

Either dice up 1-2 cloves of raw garlic and pop into a sandwich or in a cupasoup daily; alternatively to avoid bad breath, swallow each garlic clove whole washed down with water or juice. Eat a piece of bread if possible to absorb a little in the tummy. I have not had the flu for well over 10 years eating garlic in casseroles or on meat regularly and/or when a tummy virus is coming on; ditto I consume the garlic. The garlic goes straight to the infection site in the body and expels it rapidly; however there may be a little dysentery with some people initially therefore I recommend Hydralite or Gastrolyte to rehydrate if its a tummy virus.

Next, with rota virus (had the beginnings of this for 36 hours) and nipped it in the bud quickly, I used 1-2 garlic cloves consumed raw, hydralite every 4 hours, after the garlic had settled down and done its job after 12 hours, I used glucose jelly babies or any glucose lols to bind my tummy in order for the bug not to dehydrate me while lowering my fever. Most people know all that part.

No dairy products with the rota virus as the helicobacter enjoys feeding off dairy.

Cooled boil water is what I use with any bug for content purity if consuming Hydralite or Gastrolyte where you receive the minerals necessary for rehydration. Otherwise tap water for minerals.

Mineral water is great too for binding after the garlic has been used to expel the viruses.

All the best

It’s true, usually I have the flu for a week, but using this naive, naturalistic nonsense it only lasts for 7 days!

Erindale is good but….

If you want quick in and out, this is not the surgery for you. Nearly every doctor runs late, except dr Sharmin and Dr Chowdry. Mainly because they skip over your symptoms and give you the standard “its a virus” Even though you have something more serious that another doctor actually sent for tests and found (Chowdry tried that once… I will never go back to him again) Sharmin asks you what you think it might be, which I find incredibly frustrating. You’re the friggin doctor, you tell me!!! I have never been overly impressed with her.

The good ones there are Dr Gooding, but he is only 2 days, dr brand, dr mcguiness. Also Dr rosoninski, he is as old as the day is long but thorough. Also he does his notes old school by hand so if you see him, it wont be on the computerised notes next time.

The thing about Erindale is you can never get in on the day unless you are super early on the phone. I have had trouble getting in quickly if I am sick or the kids and need a cert for work for a couple of days. In those instances, I have gone to Isabella and got in on the same day. been pleased with their doctors so far, but have only used them for the kids. I’m thinking of moving all of us over there but haven’t got around to it.

I’ve been going to Tuggeranong Square Medical Practice for the last two decades. They open seven days a week, and at least some public holidays. I go there every six months for a routine script rewrite, plus other occasions as required, and I’ve never been unable to get in on the day or within 24 hours. That’s important to me — being able to get in without waiting for days when you’re miserable or in pain and need to see a doctor ASAP. The doctors there charge different fees, but most of them are accepting new patients. They don’t bulk-bill. I’ve had better than average experiences with Dr Chris Ayres and Dr Paul Hughes.

Can reccomend Kambah Village medical practice. I think there are a couple of newer doctors (to the practice) that are building their books. They all also supervisor medical students from the ANU on a regular basis. (which is good because new dr’s need to be trained)

I currently go to Kambah Village Medical practice and they are great but the books are closed. i rang this week again and they still couldnt tell me when (or if) the books would re-open and that includes getting an appointment for bub when they are born in a couple of weeks…. 🙁

Dr David Brand at Erindale. Excellent Dr and my teenage daughter and I are more comfortable with him than with the female Drs mentioned above.
BTW, a colleague of mine was unable to get into the midwife clinic until she was 28 weeks – they were literally booked out, which was not ideal at all (as you miss certain benchmark tests). Is this your difficulty too?

No, Thankfully i have been able to see a doctor/midwife before 28 weeks. I can’t beleive the midwife clinic was booked out that far ahead!

Can recommend Dr Chris Ayers and Dr Phillip Verghese at Tuggeranong Square Medical Practice.

I’ll add my vote for Gordon Valley Medical

I fully agree with the recommendation of..stay the hell away from Calwell medical center.

Conder Surgery is ok, they bulk bill under 16’s and HCC holders. The only downside is that they are open 9-5 monday to friday (and apparently saturday mornings, but last time i tried to book one, for the saturday of the long weekend? They said they were closed, because of the public holiday..on monday. sigh) They also have a nurse to do vaccinations and such which is..i guess comforting

Not to put the mokkers on Erindale, but I had a but of an odd experience there with my first pregnancy which ended in an early ish miscarriage. Wasn’t either of the doctors mentioned in the previous post, and I have had recommendations for Dr Sharman, so she probably is worth seeng.

Avoid the Calwell medical centre. Hopeless.

We have stuck main,y with Gordon Valley Medical. Owned by a husband and wife and they have a nurse there also to take care of otherr stuff such as vaccinations etc which is handy when you have a kid and probably means the doctors are more accessible. Never had a bad experience there and would recommend Katherine, Richard or Reeni.

I can recommend, Dr Cousins, Dr Greblo and Dr Lyons at the Phillip Medical Centre. Those three doctors are fantastic. They also bulk bill children and the fee for adults without a pension card is only $40. They have a mini-ward like treatment room with imaging upstairs, which is bulk billed.

The Annie Lim Family Practice in the John James Medical Centre (Deakin) is great. The whole family is with them – they bulk bill children (although they do not bulk bill adults).

Waramanga Medical Centre is quite good, and you can almost always get an appointment on the same day for something urgent. They also have Saturday hours.

I can happily recommend Drs McGuinness and Sharman at Erindale Health. Both female.
