As seen on Macarthur Avenue

Possibly more alarming than the confirmation of extraterrestrial life is the sight of a garbage bin available for public use under the Stanhope junta. It helps when they’re cast in solid concrete.

UPDATE: Good Grief! We made the UFO Review.

The bin was produced by Queanbeyan based company “Sunset Insdustries” circa late 60’s early 70’s. It had a fibreglass inner that drained ‘liquids’. It is Brutalist by nature 😉 that was *the* style afterall…

My grandfather established Sunset, but that was back in the day when Government(s) provided bin emptying services. A lot of street furniture in the ACT (at the time) was produced there – and a lot of it has lasted to this day. Especially the huge mutha exposed-aggregate planters around shopping centres…

Oh well… That was probably a lot more than anyone wanted to know, but hey 🙂

I think that bin was actually an extra in the first star wars movie, which was titld at the time, star wars.

It looks awesome. They should preserve the work of talented graffiti artists. Just bust the culprits behind the lame-ass ‘gangzta belco boyz wazzup’ ones – when they emerge from their mother’s basements.

Isnt there meant to be a metal liner in there with handles?

I like the word softhead _ googled it with satisfying results .

Terribly hard to empty those bins. Needs a fork-lift to get it off the ground.

It may be the last public bin in Canberra – quick – heritage list it.

I must admit that that bin, sans graffiti says ‘Please kill me’.

Brutalist architecture so perfectly displayed in the form of a bin, can any other city on earth match that!
