Graffiti and how to stop it

Is there anyone in Canberra who can tell me how to remove graffiti from a colourbond fence? I spent 3yrs saving up for a large fence which backs on to a main street only to have it pristine for 6mths. Then the animals defaced it (they are too awful to be called artists). As the back fence can now be seen from all roads Im sure that this was the intention, to have their tags seen by a larger audience. As a disabled widow how on earth can I remove this disgrace from my back fence? Also, if it can be removed is there someone who can do this procedure in town?

To remove this type of tagging could we not perhaps get areas set aside which are regularly whitewashed or have a campaign where items such as the great ‘tardis’ painted on a utility box at Red Hill could be an incentive? Lets make these folk have places to go to rather than give the city a bad name. Please, lets not ignore the rules of decency, paint on your own home not others.

The best way to protect your fence is t get a “graffiti” artist to do a mural on it, of your choosing. These guys don’t ruin each other’s work.

Just to put our problems with graffiti in context, here is a news report in Singapore which led to a major reappraisal right across the nation of perimeter fences, including the installation of a brand new system around CHangi airport’s 22km fence:

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/singaporescene/vandals-breach-bishan-depot-smrt-train-vandalised-155409194.html

The key phrase, which explains why they were so upset and decided to take action, is:

“This is the second incident in two years that an SMRT train has been vandalised. “

Twice in 2 years! A crime wave!

A previous Singapore graffiti incident was carried out by a Swiss tourist and his fellow traveller from the UK (the latter one is still at large). The Swiss guy got a 7 month sentence and a good touch up with a cane (imagining that happening here? Are you reading this Mr Barr?).
Also noted is that the target was the depot for the trams. The tram operators in Singapore are contenders for the tram contract in Canberra I believe.
Can we expect our visionary trams to be the targets for graffiti attack?

Interesting how our fences are covered with the stuff, but not a drop in Queanbeyan.

People in Queanbeyan know that if they’re caught there will be consequences.

Maybe a literary deficiency?

Tags and cr&ppy pictures are literature now? Seriously, though, there is heaps less graffiti in Queanbeyan than Canberra.

It’s hard to do good graffiti when you are legless after a night at one of Queanbeyan’s main street pubs, even if you haven’t been king hit.

I know. What is it with these people? Socialising instead of causing wanton damage to public property…

And I hear you about the king hit stuff. I’m so glad that never happens in civic…

Getting blotto at a Queanbeyan pub is a lot cheaper than doing it in Civic and there are more alleyways to chunder in.

They’re probably stealing the graffiti now.

Yeah that’s probably it.

Or it could be that Queanbeyan is now mostly a pleasant, upper middle class town with a local city council that focuses on core service delivery.

Do you mean they are not planning a tram network? Total lack of vision there resultant from focusing on fundamental council services.

In terms of removal, I tried the specialist stuff from Bunnings, then metho and neither worked at all. My neighbour then brought out a jerry can of petrol and some old microfibre cloths. Not even scrubbing hard, off it came.

The sooner you remove it, the easier it is.

We could always electrify the fences… 🙂

The best way to stop graffiti, right in its footprint, is to stop giving people welfare money. No-one that has to pull his own weight will concern himself with this sort of predatory nonsense.

I’m not sure that old age pensioners are to blame here so why do you want to take away their meagre income?

Thanks for supporting me for once.

I can see the front page of the Daily Telegraph tomorrow – “Graffiti Thugs and Slouch Hats” – with the obligatory mention of Brothers 4 Life and Islamic State.

No, they will be too busy robbing houses and mugging people.

The ACT Government actually has 26 designated grafitti sites around Canberra.

http://www.tams.act.gov.au/city-services/public_areas/graffiti/graffiti_sites

Give Mark from Sprayjet a call http://www.sprayjetcanberra.com.au/ . Can be difficult to remove depending on the paint used though.

My mate’s neighbour sprinkled horse manure along his fence. Problem solved.
