Canberrans with a disability are reminded to apply for the $7.72 million in Enhanced Service Offer grants available as a result of the ACT Government’s National Disability Insurance Scheme agreement with the Commonwealth, with more than 100 applications already submitted.

Minister for Disability Joy Burch said applications for the first round of the ESO closed in two weeks, and already there had been strong interest from the community.

“So far 103 applications have been submitted and a further 291 are in progress, and more than 400 have attended information sessions.” Ms Burch said.

Applications received include submissions for both new and traditional means of support, indicating that the community is embracing the flexibility offered by the ESO grants and, from 2014, DisabilityCare.

“One applicant, for example, is a young woman with disability who wants to develop a jewellery business as a social venture. It’s pleasing to see the community has embraced this significant reform that will put the needs of people with disability at the centre.”

Along with new supports and services, people may also have access to aids and equipment, modifications carers, access to day-time activities and respite services.

“This is in preparation the roll-out of DisabilityCare in July 2014 which will give greater control and choice and is part of Canberra developing as a connected community.”

Ms Burch encouraged eligible applicants to seek assistance if they required further informationon the Enhanced Service Offer. Applications for the first round close on 9 August 2013 and the second round will open on 30 September 2013. For more information or to submit an application visit www.act.gov.au/ndis
