The ABC has the happy news that population growth has brought us a small increase in GST revenue:

The ACT will get a $20 million increase in GST funding after recommendations from the Commonwealth Grants Commission were agreed to.

Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan met his state and territory counterparts in Canberra on Wednesday morning and agreed to adopt the recommendations from the Commission.

As a result, the ACT has been allocated an extra $20 million over the next financial year due to an increase in population.

It does, however, mean we need to consider what a shrinking ACT would look like if the public service gets a haircut.

Make sure there are no homeless on the streets this winter?

No-one freezing and starving?

Support services for these people. Shelters for women, shelters for men. Safe, warm places where these people can go when in need. And services to make sure that people can move on from whatever has befallen them.

Then again, this should already be happening.

Very well said. Aside from those already in trouble, I think there are many in this town who are truly only a step or two away from skid row – and the clouds are surely gathering.

That’s handy, I don’t think we’ve been spending enough on public art by out of state wanks lately
