The Greens’ Meredith Hunter is calling for a review of whistleblower laws.

The ACT Greens will today table a motion calling for a review into Whistleblower laws, a response to the Justice and Community Safety Report into the Freedom of Information Act 1989 and a response to the Ombudsman’s concerns about complaint handling in the ACT.

“A robust system of accountability mechanisms together with a culture of openness is essential for good governance,” ACT Greens Parliamentary Leader, Meredith Hunter MLA, said today.

“Whistleblower laws have been the subject of all manner of reviews over many years across many different jurisdictions in Australia and around the world. The ACT should take advantage of all of this work and improve our system.

Nothing like mechanisms and frameworks to give bureaucrats something to hide behind.

Dr AJ Brown (Griffith Uni) released the Whistling While You Work report this (last?) year. Concerns about the treatment of whistle blowing is addressed in the report. The main problem is what actually constitutes whistle blowing. Every jurisdiction has a different definition and some people ‘think’ they are ‘blowing the whistle’ when they really are airing grievances.

Talk about missing the point. The Ombudsman’s report into complaint handling was more about how the ACTPS treats complaints from the public, wiht people having to resort to FOI or a complaint to the Ombudsman just to get a reply to a letter.

Um … nope. But nice to see you turned up long enough to run around posting as many anti-Green points as you could make up.

The Ombudesman’s report explicitly linked poor complaint handling on a culture of opacity and lack of accountability mechanisms in departments. These issues are are covered by … (wait for it) … Whistleblower laws!

Thanks for playing though. You don’t go away empty-handed, because each contestant leaves us with a ‘If the Greens have their way, we’ll all starve in the dark!’ tie-pin.
