Greens call for natural burials in the ACT

Until this morning I was blissfully unaware of the natural burial movement.

Now thanks to the Greens’ Caroline Le Couteur calling for the proposed Southern Cemetery to be a “natural cemetery” I have learned something new.

As far as I can tell the idea of a natural cemetery is to not have any markers (one assumes someone has to map out where clear ground can be found) and for the bodies to rot as fast as possible.

Perhaps it’s time to adopt the Zoroastrian practice of feeding the vultures?

Mr Stanhope has put out what looked like an angry reply, but until his website is back up we won’t be able to know what it is.

I’d like to see the Greens ‘naturally buried’ somewhere………………………..

Aspestos, not sure if that’s supposed to keep out the flies and mozzies or it’s a kind of basting sauce?

Asbestos lining would be in case a bush fire went through Belagalo. Aspestos would be similar, but use finely diced basil?

And olive oil….pine nuts………………typos are never missed are they.

The biodegradable container is a great idea, but they should go one step further and be promoting vertical burials as well. Conventional horizonal burials take up a lot of space.

The Greens have actually had a good idea. Cotton shrouds will make it so much easier for the worms to do their work. And anyway, I won’t be needing this body of mine after it’s gone.

Belanglo had natural burials and rapid decomposition, well, unmarked shallow graves in the scrub and half a bag of lime…

Yes but you have the up front cost of the appropriate backpacking clothing and equipment and then you have to waste all that time hitchhiking. There’s gotta be a better option.

I’d like to be buried in a coffin made from lead and arsenic, inlaid with gold. Be sure to wrap me up in non-recyclable plastic bags and pack me in tightly using styrofoam.

Throw in some aspestos and you can sign me up to that burial plan.

Typical greens policy. Human Beings are nobodies.

Capt’n RAAF I like your thinking.

Having more than a touch or Norse blood myself, the thought of a cremation aboard a burning boat has always been appealing.

Load me and my pair of stupid Beagles onto a wooden boat and push me out onto LBG. Set me on fire with arrows loosed from the bank and watch me burn my way to Valhalla………make sure not to do it too close to the water squirter, don’t want my half burned corpse floating around the lake for days on end until that paddle steamer hits me and spits my remains all over the shop!

Unfortunately the Greens are leading the charge to have those bags banned so by the time your number is up you may have to settle for glad wrap.

…only in ACT. I’m sure I can get some from across the border.

I still reckon a better way for a send off would be a barby and few beers in the backyard so your mates could say their farewells, followed by a big bonfire where you go up in smoke. Nice and easy and no middle men to pay.

Carboard boxes or paper bags/calico bags are most sensible containers for dead bodies. It’s madness to bury fine timbers crafted into furniture better than most people have in their homes. Plywood would do just as well, MDF, or just good old cardboard. People could write messages on it, like an office farewell card.

Greens trying to detract from the taxpayers waste of money that was the night rider bus program. It bugs me how politicians try to hide a bad idea with another potential bad idea.

Seems like a good idea. I would like to be buried in the earth in a natural environment in the way that is the best for the environment, but where can I do that in Canberra?

I’m not sure about your Zorostrian folk, JB; it seems a little disrespectful. But I do like the Greens’ idea. Both of the corpse disposal options currently available require some carpenter to slave away over a box I won’t need and that none of my family will have any advantage from. If there were a natural burial option, it would be my first preference as I don’t want my family wasting unnecessary money on my body after I’m finished with it.
