The Greens’ Caroline Le Couteur is getting in the election fantasy spending game with a policy to spend more on animal welfare.

“The Greens Animal Welfare package includes much needed funding to the RSPCA, a desexing subsidy program for pets whose owners are on low incomes, as well as legislative changes to improve standards for poultry as well as cat and dog breeding.
— The $930,000 Responsible Pet Care & Animal Farming Package includes:
— $400,000 over four years for additional ongoing funding for the RSPCA
— $530,000 over four years for a desexing pets subsidy for concession card holders
— Outlawing cruel farming practices in the Territory
— Licensing of cat and dog breeders and mandatory standards for breeding operation

The expenditure proposed is quite modest over four years.
I also can’t see any reason to NOT support bans on cage egg production and intensive sow stalls, though with Parkwood having being bribed to convert to barn production, is this even a problem in ACT now?

Yep. kudos to the Greens, for at least starting the dialogue and putting these things out as policies. For many people, these are pivotal issues. Cruel farming, cruel practices around the pet industry… I’d argue that money spent here is a better, more moral use of money than giving tax revenue to people to buy their kids expensive toys. Someone’s got to make a start on banning hen batteries and sow stalls. Why not the ACT?

Fantastic, except for the minor inconvenience that the Greens will never be in power.

Never.

They don’t need to be in power per se, they need only have whatever party is in power by the balls.

This is shaping up to be an interesting election. Interstate elections would suggest only tiny growth or more likely a swing agains the Greens, and of course a very large swing away from Labor. But the local Libs are putting no effort in, and Canberra is a Labor town.

Crap. The Greens will never put the tories in power.

Never.

Simple as that.

Who said anything about putting Tories in power? Of course they wouldn’t. But for passing legislation, the Greens (or whoever is on the cross) can exercise a lot of power and hold government by the balls.

And the party in power, let’s call them the ALP, can simply tell the Greens to get stuffed.

As I said, it’s not as if the Greens will change their allegiance.

Unless the ALP needs to get something through that the Libs won’t aside with them on.

Damn right. It could (and may well) go 8 Libs 6 Labor 3 Greens, and the Greens would still form an alliance with Labor.

*shrugs* There’s only been one outright win by a party in the ACT (Labor 2004 I think?) and Hare-Clark all but guarantees that them nasty Jesus-hugging Libs will never run the joint again.

Thanks RSPCA_Comms, yep I am a big advocate for dog welfare, and am aware of puppy farms, backyard breeders, the link to pet shops, and all the horrific practices that go on. Thank you for the work that you do.

Since the Hall Markets are in the ACT, is there anything you can do about those dickheads from “Toy Puppies R Us” selling cute fluffies there, even though their breeding facility is in NSW? (Assuming they still do, I haven’t heard the ad for a while).

I have see those puppies at the Hall Markets. They always seem so sad and listless.

Vote Green, so that cute puppies and fluffy kittens will never want for anything again. Or, vote Green, or Mittens gets it!

If the Greens were serious, they would have a central plank of their policy working out arrangements with the NSW government. Where is the commitment from the NSW Greens to make any of their pie in the sky plans work? For that matter, what about the Victorians?

As usual, they are prancing around going la-la-la without a clue about practical issues. Sorry, Mittens.

‘The three little kittens, they washed their mittens,
And hung them out to dry,
“Oh, mother dear, do you not hear,
That we have washed our mittens?”
“What, washed your mittens, then you’re good kittens,
But I smell a rat close by.”
“Meow, meow, meow,
We smell a rat close by.”‘

I love that! Here we see the formerly cute kittens discovering their power to kill rats. Or to coalesce with power? Not so fluffy!

But anything that cuts back on puppy farming, or even the marketing of puppies from puppy farms, is a Good Thing. Do kitten farms exist?

I’d like to $530K over four years to desex some greens..

Fantastic if it all comes about! The “mandatory standards for breeding operation” would be a very good thing but I would assume most puppy farms in the area are actually NSW 🙁

Although it is unlikely that large scale puppy mills exist in the ACT, thousands of puppies (and kittens) are sold through classifieds and online each year in Canberra.

These animals potentially face the same welfare issues as animals in large scale facilities which is why RSPCA would like to see so called ‘backyard breeders’ adhere to licensing conditions and mandatory breeding standards.

Animals in pet shops typically come from backyard breeders. You may be interested to have a look at the Smart Puppy Buyers Guide at http://www.rspca.org.au/news/smart-puppy-buyers-guide.html

For more information about the welfare issues involved in puppy breeding operations please visit http://www.closepuppyfactories.org It is these sorts of issues, which even on a smaller scale remain abhorrent, that RSPCA hope to address through mandatory licensing and breeding standards.

Regards,

RSPCA ACT

No, but from time to time they do have the party ‘in’ power by the short and curlies.

Sounds like a good plan.
