The Greens’ Amanda Bresnan has made a call for Park’n’Ride facilities in Kippax and Calwell to encourage bus use:

“Residents in these areas are long overdue for an investment in public transport infrastructure that makes it cheaper and easier to get to and from work,” Ms Bresnan said.

“Park’n’Ride infrastrucure in Calwell and Kippax, along with a new REDEX-style direct service to the Parliamentary Triangle and Civic, would give families more transport options and boost the nearby shops and community.

Is it something you’ve been waiting for?

Hey Deano and Bubzie, our population is growing and needs to sustain our needs. As a Bonython resident I stop frquently at Calwell on my way to work as I still have to drive. Should a bus stop there more frequently I would use it. I think its great getting a redex for this area as my kids go to school there at Calwel High, I can spend quality time with them when we meet at the shops.

Maybe the Greens (none of whom live in Belconnen) could try living in the ‘burbs and discover the joys of free parking close by a bus stop, all without a sign to tell them how to do it.

Or they could just try catching a bus. All the MLAs should give that a go.

I saw Caroline in a queue for the bus just yesterday arvo.

Where does Meredith Hunter live?! And do any MLAs catch a bus? I know Rattenbury cycles….

Chop71 beat me to it.

And I hardly suspect a park and ride at Kippax would boost the shopping – it’s already a local hub.

People can park for free at both, and there are buses. But then, those who live around there (rather than the inner north and innner sout) would know. Maybe those Greens could try catching buses rather than driving around in their taxpayer provided vehicles.

In fact, maybe all MLAs should give that a go.

Speaking of Park’n’Ride, they really need to increase the number of car places at Jamison shops. The carpark behind the center is huge and mostly unutilised during work hours, but there is only 12-18 bays allocated to Park’n’Ride.

I’d prefer to see improvements made to the so-called “Xpresso” services that are currently nothing more than clever marketing. On average the Xpresso service in my area takes roughly the same time as the standard 3XX series, which is about 20-30minutes longer than it takes to drive to the city. The Xpresso service also uses 20+ y/o buses with no aircon and poor heating. Not exactly offering any incentive to use public transport.

I’ve written to ACTION a couple of times on this topic and didn’t receive a response.

LIGHT RAIL

Before the Redex was introduced, it was proposed to have one to/from Kippax as well as Gungahlin, but only the Gungahlin one eventuated. It could be good, but as always would depend on how direct the route is and how long the trip takes. Having direct buses that extend over a longer period than the few “peak hour” buses currently available would certainly improve on the current situation. And with the number of people who work in the parliamentary triangle, would be good to have a few of the buses bypassing Civic for a faster trip.

Calwell already has some sort of park-and-ride service. The shopping centre has spots right next to the bus stop, i really cant see much of a need for a new and improved one.

– Calwell resident who catches the bus each day..

Umm, there already is a park and ride facility at Kippax and Calwell. It even says so in the Action bus time tables https://www.action.act.gov.au/Routes_101001/pdfs/11-111_combined.pdf
https://www.action.act.gov.au/Routes_101001/pdfs/17_combined.pdf

But I’d love to hear the explanation as to how Park and Ride and REDEX will boost the nearby shop and community.

That’s orginal
