Greens say Majura freight claim based on guesswork.

The ACT Greens have accused the ACT Government of basing its argument that a Majura parkway would divert freight from Canberra on guesswork.

The ACT Government has claimed a freeway through the Majura Valley is needed to keep freight trucks out of urban Canberra. Questioning from the ACT Greens has revealed that the ACT Government’s arguments are based on guesswork rather than data.

“The ACT Government had to admit that they have no data about the amount of freight travelling through Canberra or about how much of this could be diverted with a new freeway,” said Greens Transport Spokesperson, Amanda Bresnan.

“First the Government tried to sell this freeway as a panacea for commuting problems and congestion. But with revelations about the likelihood of the road remaining congested, it has flipped to an argument about diverting freight out of urban Canberra.”

“Now it is revealed that the Government does not have the data on which to base this argument.

“Responses to my questioning in Budget Estimates show the Government has no data about how much freight is passing through Canberra, no data about the origins or destinations of any freight, and no data about how much freight a freeway might divert.”

“It is important that a $288m infrastructure project be scrutinised, and that the Government provide clear data and evidence for why a project should go ahead.

“The ACT Greens are the only party properly scrutinising this major outlay of Canberrans’ taxes and questioning whether a highway through the Majura Valley is really the best use of our limited resources,” Ms Bresnan said.

The Greens do not care for Canberra roads. Every week, large amounts of hydraulic oil are squirted onto the bitumen by the garbage and recycling trucks, some of which are registered in NSW but are garaged in the ACT (breach of RTA regulations which also require the interstate registered trucks to be tested by the RTA inspectors for such faults as oil leaks). I have made representations to The Greens, RTA and urban services but no one gives a sh*t. The Greens won’t get off their collective ar*es and check it out. This is a problem all over the ACT – just have a look at the roadway next to where you put your bins out. Not only does the weekly dose of oil get washed into the lakes and rivers but it makes the road slippery and it is a traffic hazzard. The oil can, over time, also react with chemicals in the bitumen and cause degradation of the road surface which is incredibly expensive to repair/replace. The Greens know jacksh*t about roads so they have no credibility when they comment on what is good or bad for the Majura Gully (you could hardly call it a valley!)

All the government need to do is zone some land near the new parkway for an organic fruit market and the Greens will support it.

It is probably the case – sadly. As ‘Deye’ stated, you only have to see the road to know how bad it really is! The Greens strategic view of things is appalling – they have sight only for their own small-minded approach and those of their comrades.

Come on the next election………………………………..

Or the new road could do nothing and the trucks still come through regardless. If the the majority of the trucks are all headed here anyway why the hell would a new road that bypasses for no reason actually do anything to the traffic flow?

Isn’t the intention that Majura Parkway would be a more efficient way to getting past the central city region to South and East Canberra? Also, what if future road rules ban vehicles over a certain size/weight from the city centre?

Isn’t the Green’s concern that if you build these roads people might actually use them? If so, then they do have a point. After all, if we hadn’t built Canberra in the first place then no one would have used it….

Instead of spending millions of dollars for a study of what is the bleating obvious, why doesnt Amanda idiot Bresnan go and take a look for herself? Maybe all the trucks passing through should drive through the city to demonstrate to this idiot just how much heavy traffic is diverted by using that road and just how dangerous the road currently is as a single lane road. Bresnan is just a waste of space trying to justify her existance as a politician because in her world everything just magically appears by itself, nothing has to be freighted in. Honestly, how do morons like this woman ever get voted in? Probably because the other morons are just as dumb and gets in on donkey votes!

The Greens should go and sit next to Majura road for 24 hours a day for a week and see how much freight traffic already goes that way.

All the government need to do is zone some land near the new parkway for an organic fruit market and the Greens will support it.
