ACT Policing is seeking witnesses after an aggravated robbery occurred inside the Tuggeranong Hyperdome Shopping Centre, Greenway yesterday afternoon (June 17).

Around 12.30pm a man entered a manchester store within the centre and started looking at items on display.

He was approached by a store employee who offered assistance. The man produced a small knife from within his jacket, picked up an item from the display and walked away from the store.

The man is described as Caucasian, between 190cm (6’3”) and 196cm (6’5”) in height with a slim build and dark brown hair. At the time of the incident, he was wearing dark coloured clothing.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information which may assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

Why is it that security cameras that probably cost thousands to install seem capture such crappy images – yet I can go down to Dick Smith/JB Hi Fi/etc and purchase a mobile phone for under $200 that would capture far better images than this?…

You try capturing an image with that phone which shows the whole mall corridor, and then cropping the image down to one person who could be 20m away and see how sharp it is! The trouble with CCTV is that it has to cover a wide angle to capture everything that can happen within the area being monitored, and unless the suspect walks directly under the camera, they are going to be quite small in the image. Add to this that high definition footage requires quite a bit of storage space (I have a 720p camera fitted on my bike and a 20min file is a whopping 2GB), multiplied by the number of cameras a mall like the Thuggeranong Hyperdome would have (probably over 100), multiplied the number of months (or years) the footage is required to be retained.

There’s no ‘requirement’ for keeping footage, in fact having dealt with retail security systems, I can tell you footage is rarely kept more than a month.

Imaging modules are very small and very inexpensive these days, and the backend systems growing smarter. There should be no excuse for not having better coverage. Surveillance cameras don’t need broadcast quality colour or frame rates, so while your 20min file may take up 2GB, surveillance footage need only take up a fraction of that. And with surveillance systems using RAID servers and ethernet, there’s no technological reason why terabytes of footage shouldn’t be easily handled each month.

Well, what’s the point in having the damn things then?????

God. What some men will do to get out of putting the washing out !

They’re required to have them for the insurance, so get the cheapest possible. If they actually worked, that could lead to costs from attending court, so don’t want that.

Could have been a doona, and a winter top of the range one doesn’t come cheap, so it’s potentially a pretty lucrative smash and grab! (or knife and grab?)

Anyway, I hope the moron got home and realised he’d flogged the wrong sized sheets!

One Friday night in Belconnen Mall, this guy walks out of Myer carrying sheets on his shoulder. The alarm goes off and he makes a run for the side exit. We wait to see if someone comes out of Myer to look or give chase…..but nothing. We walk in to tell a cashier only to be told it happens a lot. They will watch the security footage later…..

I ask why would anyone want to steal sheets? I am told they are sold to the brothels for cash. Oh ok I say and go about my business.

new girlfriend threatens to bail unless you get clean sheets?

She’s got expensive taste and silk sheets don’t come cheap.

But come only makes the sheets dirty again.

Well in that case an alert needs to be sent out to all Manchester stores ‘Keep an eye out for a tall dark man trying to stuff sheets down his pants.’

Was a knife really necessary though? Surely he could just grab and run with no need to traumatise the poor person, probably in running the store alone, by threatening them with a knife.

For the crim too, adding a knife to the equation takes them from a mild talking too as a petty shoplifter to a stern finger wagging as an aggravated robber.

It’s winter and there’s desperate low-lifes around, I’m surprised they choose to knock off ciggies and booze more often than blankets and doonas.

They’ll steal just about anything around Thugeranong. The other day I was in the Wollies when some bogan walks into the deoderant section, picks up one very knowingly, sprays all over and walks straight off. Clearly not sampling.

Not nice for the employee, hope they are OK. But really, stealing manchester at knifepoint? Wow… Hyperdome continues to attract the cream of the crop.
