Greg Growden addresses you Manuka Muppets

Last week the SMH’s pom-pom girl to the leather-patch and tweed brigade in Australian Rugby, Greg Growden, wrote that George Gregan should be sacked as Wallabies halfback because the coach had a forward oriented game plan that the forwards failed to deliver.

This was considered a little odd as the English Planet Rugby site had this to say when assessing man of the match:

“For the Wallabies George Gregan, breaking John Eales’s record as captain of Australia, had moments of brilliance with the variety in his play and his ability to probe close in”

Now it seems our mate Greg has had so much correspondence for his biased and faulty analysis that he’s felt the need to respond at the start of his weekly column:

“The Manuka muppets have again been bombarding the email, moaning that the only way the Wallabies will ever be entertaining is if the team comprises 15 Brumbies”

That’s right folks, anyone who disagrees with Growden’s bizarre analysis is a moaning manuka muppet. Also thinking that the incumbent half back actually had a good game behind a poor forward pack means favouring the Brumbies to fill all 15 positions.

Which is ridiculous, I can think of at least four non-Brumbies I’d have in the side.

The trouble with Growden is that he bleeds Waratah blue and thinks NSW, and NSW Rugby are shining jewel in the rugby firmament.

For years he pushed Whitaker over Gregan and was gutted when Whits realised he wasn’t good enough and was never going to be good enough to topple King George.

Growden’s never forgiven the Brumbies for stealing all those NSW players that NSW failed to select, and the Brumbies then turned them into Wallabies.

He hates the fact that we’ve won two Super12 titles and NSW have none.

But I think the thing he hates above all is that George Gregan is a private individual who exercises the right to not be at the beck and call of the Press, especially bitter and twisted gnomes like Growden.

I appreciate that he writes for the SMH, but I guess my question was more about why the opinion of some piss-ant wannabe would actually matter. Is he upset that being some third rate outsider in the rugby world isn’t enough top get him a gig as a selector? It sure seems like it.

It strikes me as odd that for all the bullshit sprouted by the Sydney rugby commentariate Gregan continues to get selected based on form. They just don get the fact that he’s on the team because he’s good at what he does.

He glories in the title of “Chief Rugby Writer” just to make sure Siro Zavis and Ben Kimber don’t get ideas above their station.

Greg Growden is one of the Sydney Morning Herald’s Rugby Journalists.

And Greg would probably have Alan Jones back as coach too, if he had his way.

Sorry, who the hell is Greg Growden?

yeah but we’d have those four starting off the bench
and we’d bring back Roffy
