Gribble Street, Gungahlin to become Efkarpidis Street

I recently found out that Gribble Street in Gungahlin is about to have its name changed to Efkarpidis Street. (Gribble was an early pioneer in Gungahlin prior to the establishment of Canberra.)

It made me wonder why a change was necessary, when Gribble Street has been formed and named for about five years already. Why rename a street instead of naming another unnamed street? What did Gribble do – or not do – to warrant having his street taken away?

A development application is currently in with ACTPLA for a club – a poker machine club I presume – on the blocks of land where Gribble Street, Kate Crace Street and The Valley Avenue intersect in Gungahlin.

I am a descendant of Thomas Gribble who settled in the 1860’s where Gribble Street is now situated. I would be very upset if they just removed the tribute to his pioneering of the area and replaced his name with a name I can’t even pronounce because they intend to build a club there. That is un-australian!

Well sloppery, when I was married for years and a ‘housewife’ I never played more bingo and pokies in my life. When I was on a pension for a few years, it was the last place I could afford (certainly regulary anyhow) when I was working, I afforded myself a bit a week.

As for calling anyone a retard because of how they chose how to entertain themselves is pathetic!

Pokies aren’t such a bad thing. They take money away from retards who would otherwise waste it, and a decent propertion gets returned to the community (including via taxes). Maybe we need to calculate how much welfare money these people spend on pokies and require all back as tax.

Reading the DA, they intend to put up a Club with pokies roughly 2 – 2.5 times the size of the Gungahlin Raider’s Club (Ie: total size equivalent to a Woden Southern Cross Club or a bit bigger, with maybe 280 – 350 machines).

I guess either
1) Some large club is about to give up their licenses and transfer them within-group (unexpected, difficult),
2) The Gaming Machine Cap is about to be lifted (unpopular), or
3) The Gaming Machine Reallocation Scheme is going to be announced, and large Clubs are about to go predatory (simplest, easiest, and a new source of tax revenue for Government).

My money’s on 3, and just watch Andrew Barr (newly appointed Minister for Gaming, formerly part of the Treasury portfolio) live up to his reputation as Minister for Things Katy Doesn’t Want To Do Because They’re Difficult or Unpopular.

(Sorry small Clubs, you were nice while we had you…)

The common reason is that the family of the person that the street was named after has requested that the name of the street be changed (i.e. ACTPLA originally couldn’t find any decendants).

I don’t see any development applications for that site and the only applications in that area I remember seeingv over the last couple of months are for a hotel (the sleeping kind) and the other was for a Salvos? community facility.

Here’s the DA for this site at the ACTPLA web site:

I wonder how much “developer donations” the Efkarpidis family paid to the ALP for this little favour?

Hellenic Club opening a Gunghalin venue? I presume this is the Efkarpidis
