Grocers are revolting

revolting grocer

Interestingly the IGA’s are running a public campaign against the ACT Government’s supermarket policies intended to increase competition.

Corner shop owners are traditionally a core Liberal constituency. (Think Manuel Xyrakis popping up with Tony Abbot at Ainslie shops whenever a loaf of bread needs tutting over).

On the other hand they’ve got more community presence than most and don’t usually attack the Government quite so openly.

I’m surprised Xyrakis has time to run the Ainslie IGA with the seemingly endless time he devotes to campaigns such as this.

“harryhaller

Give the woman a go, she is always pleasant, and works hard, maybe it wouldn’t hurt you to smile at her to see how she reacts!”

It is she that’s supposed to possess the pleasant customer service, not the customer.

IGA are a rip off

For sure they are still seem mostly locally owned, the Evatt IGA is wonderful, I couldn’t live without them. They are the same owners as when it was a Shoprite when I moved here.

Same very friendly weekday lady the whole time too. The owner or son is always about and their grog very reasonably priced.

I signed the petition.

I also lol at the title.. nice one!

IGA’s are actually owned by people or small companies. They are by definition (ATO) largely small to medium enterprises. By belonging to a larger group that purchases and supplies goods to them they take advantage of group buying power. Yes, some prices are greater than Coles or Woolies, but they are also conveniently located and provide community hubs.

Im pretty tired of the way the ACT Govt try to pick winners for us. Their record of business failure is long – a car lease business anyone ?

I’d just like to say the ladies at the O’Connor IGA are always luvverly in my experience.

Interestingly, the majority of Supabarn’s grocery lines are supplied by the IGA Warehouses! (Hence all the Black & Gold products)

This campaign is fair enough. John Stanhope is on the right track to create supermarket competition by blocking the 800-lbs gorillas Woolies and Coles from extending their grip. But why would IGA get blocked as well? IGA are a much smaller operation, and should be allowed to bid for new supermarket sites in the ACT.

I wonder if the IGA’s of the North around kaleen etc are so keen to take a swipe, after Woolies was kept out of Giralang partially due to the impact it would have on local business.

That ‘local business’ being the Superbarn in Kaleen which is part and parcel with what t they’re complaining about here – the love affair that the ACT Government seems to have with Superbarn.

I was also quite revolted to see this ad after just having paid an outrageous amount of money for some items I get elsewhere for a 1/3 less, and being treated in return, as always, in the most unfriendly manner possible by an old unhappy “lady” behind the counter in the O’Connor IGA. If it wasn’t located so conveniently I would definitely avoid this IGA, but being where it is, I sometimes (not always) put up with the prices *and* this sour old person. Wish they’d have a bit of competition though so that they get their act together.

haha, me too. but it’s not only grocers that are revolting.
So are their astronomical prices.

. . . which is, of course, the reason why Coles and Woolies and their lower prices are so dominant.

I love how a chain, whos first initial stands for ‘independent’ is now finding they have more power using their name in a non-independent manner than by actually sticking to their name of ‘independent grocers’.

verbalkint, agreed.. Id like to see a 7-11 or four-square open up in Canberra, throw the cat among the pigeons.

The campaign seems a little self-indulgent – IGA want access to 5 new, large size grocery centre sites that have been set aside for non-woolies/coles/IGA development.

Given how many of the smaller grocery sites they currently have, and how many of the big ones coles/woolies have, surely it would be better to bring some new competition from out of town, rather than bolster the current players in town?
