ACT Policing’s Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team (CIRT) is seeking witnesses to a collision on Horse Park Drive, Gungahlin, earlier today (Saturday, March 19), in which three people were conveyed to hospital.

Around 5.06am today, a black Holden Viva sedan travelling south on Horse Park Drive collided with a silver BMW 3-Series sedan travelling north.

All three occupants of the Holden – two females and a male – were conveyed to hospital in a serious condition. The driver of the BMW is believed to have fled the scene on foot. The BMW was later reported as stolen.

Police closed the road for around five hours while investigations into the collision continued.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision earlier today, or may have any information about the driver of the BMW to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

I’m so sorry to hear of your family’s ill luck, lefty. Were they heading to the airport for a holiday?

I am not sure what it is, but the past few days I have seen several instances of cars overtaking others on blind corners, curves and crests, or in the face of very visible oncoming traffic, causing everyone to dive onto the roadside to avoid collision.

I’ve seen this in NSW and the ACT, four very nasty near misses. What is going on?

Thank you EvanJames. He was driving his wife and her sister to the airport (they were off to see their very ill mother in NZ) – when the last thing he said was “what is this clown doing”? Appar the BMW was on the wrong side of the road with high beam on, heading towards him. I think then my cousin tried to swerve out of the way. The girls are at home now – sore but at home.

I have witnessed quite a few drivers like this in the early hours of the morning. Very scary.

Update: my cousin (injured driver) is being woken up today from his induced coma. No injuries on his head or organs (thank goodness) – but plenty of broken bones – hip, knees, ankle, sternum, bit of his spine, etc.

24 year old driver – out on bail……….maybe they should force him to spend time at ICU

Is CRK in custody at the moment?

If the occupants of the Holden were all taken to hospital in a serious condition it makes you wonder about how the driver of the BMW manage to flee on foot. I’m fairly confident there would be some DNA evidence on the interior of the beemer that will prove or disprove the owner’s claim that the car was stolen.

Had the same thought – there should be a bit of evidence spread about the BMW with any luck. Or am I again being misled by all the CSI type shows at the moment and there’s nothing to compare said stuff with?

The passengers in the car hit by the stolen BMW are my cousins – on their way to the airport……the driver is in intensive care at present. My thoughts are with you all……..keep strong.

Bloody innocent people hurt by gutless idiots….

I would be interested to know where exactly on Horse Park Drive the major accident occurred as my one occurred on the newly resealed bit which seemed a bit looser than most newly resealed roads to me…

Accident happened approx half way between Mapleton Av and Anthony Rolfe Av.

It’s not the state of the road that causes accidents, its the ignorance of drivers, inexperienced and experienced. Sure the road contributes but at the end of the day drivers need to drive to the conditions and within their ability!

As an aside, the vehicle being called stolen was probably being driven by the owner or a family member or friend who was either drunk or on drugs and won’t own up for what they have done! (my opinion only).
Suddenly being reported stolen after a serious accident is just to convenient!

I think if there was more of a police presence on Horse Park Drive and Anthony Rolf Ave there would be less idiots screaming up and down these two roads in particular. Therefore less accidents and fatalities!!
I live on Anthony Rolfe Ave close to Horse Park Drive and am always hearing hoons revving and racing along with total disregard for other road users and residents alike!

From http://twitter.com/#!/ACTPol_Traffic
“Please take care and slow down on the resealed Horse Park Drive, Gungahlin. Three collisions on that section of road since 5am Friday.”

Our old friend SGS has posted on Facebook that he had a minor crash on the same road whilst returning from Deniliquin about about an hour before the collision took place. He’s OK but his car needed to be towed.

I’ve been back from Deni for over a week, but otherwise yes, that’s right. I would be interested to know where exactly on Horse Park Drive the major accident occurred as my one occurred on the newly resealed bit which seemed a bit looser than most newly resealed roads to me…if it was the same spot, then that makes me worried that we’ll see more accidents up there in the coming days.

While reporting after the fact could be treated as suspicious, it is also very likely that the owner would wake up some time after 5.06am only to find their car has been nicked overnight.

Three people were conveyed to hospital in the collision? Wow – that’s convenient.

How about ‘after which, three people were taken to hospital’?

Do ACT Policing not have people proof read their releases?

Funny that.
