Hence my If I stand to lose more than I win (Especially if I do not win the competition overall) then I do not enter.

I have plenty of Gunners photos – ill certainly be entering.

If you don’t like their conditions – don’t enter.

Whingeing on this site may make you feel better, but the constant rambling about merits/demerits of aspects of photography is giving this place a week old cycling pants feel about it.

Get my drift ?

Yeah, If I was running a comp like this, condition number one would be “No bush lawyers.”

Whatever happened to the good old days when you didn’t have to get permission to pass wind, sign a waiver not to offend anyone, etc?

how about making the alterations subject to the approval of the photographer as well? what you and the graphic designers may regard as a small crop could be seen as the photographer as a large change in framing and changes the intent of the shot

“However you grant to the Conservation Council and its affiliated bodies a non-exclusive, perpetual, royalty free license to the intellectual property rights in any material submitted by you”

who are your affiliated bodies? it a fair question considering you want royalty free rights granted to them

“It is your responsibility, as the photographer, to (a) ensure that people who appear in your photos understand what the photos will be used for, and (b) ensure that you have their consent to use their image in this way.”

This is tricky, for competition use it isn’t required to have a model release for people in the photo, if its public space you don’t even need permission. This however doesn’t absolve the Cons Council from needing a release if they want to use the images in a commercial sense

Sarah_Cc – please let it be noted that I was not speaking solely of your organisation – but it was a general comment.

I have added a point to the conditions of entry –

“Images and descriptions will not be materially altered; they may have minor adjustments made during the graphic design process, to suit the publication they are included in. The Conservation Council respects the work of competition entrants, and will not wilfully misrepresent a photographer, their photographs or descriptions. Any alterations made during the graphic design process are subject to the approval of the Conservation Council.”

The full conditions can be viewed
here

I hope this helps, and like I said, if you’re keen to enter but have any concerns, just contact me.

Danman, the Cons Council’s right to publish photos is non-exclusive, so you don’t lose the right to use your own photos how ever you like 🙂

As a hobbyist photographer for 8 years its simple to me – If I stand to lose more than I win (Especially if I do not win the competition overall) then I do not enter.

A lot of companies do use a small prize pool for an incentive for photographer – btu many fail to note that their photos now belong to someone else – and from a corporations stance a small proze is just an expense (although a very cheap one) to gain 10’s of 1000’s of stock photos which they now own sole rights to….

As far as I go – if I win – thats fine – ill jst go back to teh same spot and take an identical photo – as they have the ownership of the digital file – not the scenery contained in it.

this is what I hate about most photography competitions, to enter you have to relinquish your rights. Sarah, why is that section in the T&C to start with? What makes the organisation think it knows better than the photograher editing their work? As a resident of Gungahlin and a keen photographer this sort of thing both disappoints me and keeps me from entering

Hi Jenny,

I can assure you that the Conservation Council will not be making huge changes to photos or descriptions, we’re definitely not interested in misrepresenting photographers and their work! Any changes will be minor editing at most.

I’ll add something to this effect to the terms and conditions, and I’ll post here once it’s up. I hope this helps – if you want to enter the competition but are still concerned, please feel free to contact me.

Sarah

The Terms and Conditions of this comp warrant a bit of a look at if you’re considering entering it. The CC gets the right to alter the images or change the info attached to them. Just something to think about.

I imagined the comp would mainly feature photos of the pond with a submerged shopping trolley, a Shag sitting on top of it whilst surrounded by blue-green algae and empty beer cans?

Not if I have anything to do with it Mr Evil. Maybe I can get some photos of bogans doing burnouts down Mirrabei Drive

I hope this competition is carbon neutral.
