ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an attempted forced home entry in Gungahlin last night (Sunday, February 6).

Around 9.50pm, a Gungahlin couple were confronted at their front door by two males carrying what appeared to be a firearm and a large knife. The males attempted to force their way into the house, but were pushed out by the couple.

The weapons were not used on the victims during the incident; however the offender carrying the firearm struck the male victim with a single punch to the cheek.

The male offender with the firearm was described as Caucasian, aged in his early 20s, approximately 180cm (5’11”) tall, with a thin build, short blond hair and was wearing a grey coloured hooded jumper.

The second male offender was described as having an Asiatic/Islander appearance, aged in his early 20s, approximately 174 – 178cm (5’8”-5’10”) tall, with a thin build and was wearing a black hooded jumper.

Police ask anyone who was at in the area at that time and may have heard anything or seen people matching the description to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

#14 Stevian said “I smell BS on that story. The thieves burgle him and then come back the next night? Yeah right. Take it to Stormfront, they’ll believe your tall tales and you’ll fit right in.”
I recall a case in Melbourne from the 90’s where a property owner annoyed by repeated burglar activity at a property of his, prepared a night-time ambush and shot one or two intruders with a rifle – I do not recall it was his home, maybe an empty house for rent or a business premises. Can not recall if anyone died or if he ever did time. I recall he was in court.

Yes, that’s it mate, I remember now it was an empty house that he was renovating or selling or something. It was definately a .303 because I remember seeing the footage of the cops taking it from the house. He killed both intruders from memory.

So Stevi-anne #14, no need for me to head off to Der Stormfront after all……bunch of amateurs anyway!

Damn! All I have by my front door is a smallish cyclamen…

Yeah, speedy. But, at least he’s our nut job (and, go on, admit it, he’s right a lot of the time). He reminds all too much of a Wng Cdr (retired) I know who, these days, lives far too far away for the regular sharing of beers.

As you were, Cap’n.

Using a sword or a firearm to protect yourself from a gun/knife weilding PAIR of assailants is entirely reasonable and there isn’t a court in Australia that would put you away……just make sure you kill those bastards stone cold dead!!!

Sure okay, what ever you say cappan’. I won’t be trying anything soon. Personal property isn’t worth my life.

Who said anything about losing your own life? That’s not how these things work mate, the idea is to kill the other blokes, easy enough if you are prepared and have a pair. These scumbags expect no resistance, so put up a fight, any fight, and btw, if everyone subscribed to the ‘personal property isn’t worth my life’ theory then crooks would be running rampant.

You need to send them a clear message, try this s*** on in my house and you leave in a bag!

As for evening or day time burglaries, there are preventative measures to keep yourselves safer in the home of a night.

Set off your car alarm and leave it on during the invasion and it’s best to keep your carkeys handy by your bed or table for that reason.

Set off your home alarm and leave it on, as the noise for one, will drive out the burglars – on a remote left near your bed or table.

Keep your mobile either on you or when investigating noise around your home, dial 000 and leave the call running for it to be recorded by the operator. Alternatively record the assailant’s conversations on your mobile quickly.

Get a dog if possible, few people, armed or not, wish to carry through a burglary with a dog barking or attacking them. Many homes around tuggeranong that are burgled or broken into of an evening with residents home, have been found not to have dogs or neighbouring dogs alerting them in the first instance, that someone is around the home.

Keep your television down of a night so you’re aware of anyone approaching your front door or home and identify a vehicle that is different to your neighbour’s vehicle or visitors later of a night. Remove hedges, large scrubby bushes and install garden lights and security lights at the front side and back of your home.

A known deterrent.

My dogs alert me when someone has crossed the threshold, whether I am awake or asleep. For older people, its always a good idea to set an alarm through winter and set it for the rooms you are not sleeping in ie for the entry way, lounge kitchen etc.

Working shift work and working from home involving odd hours, it is interesting that while people have their televisions blaring or homes built like fort knox, unaware of their surroundings, thieves are able to break a window in some of these large homes or manually open a garage door, with the occupants not being aware until its too late.

Cnbragirl I learned many years ago never to jog at night between 7-10pm after three blokes between their late twenties and early forties drove in off the highway in nsw plates stopping, opening their doors, to make a grab for me and my border collie on a dark, cold stormy night near a school at around 7.30pm.

I showed them my heavy magna light, lifted my mobile up to record them, while walking briskly towards homes across the road.

They did a ‘u turn’ driving back out on to the highway doing a hundred ks around the block to get out before being caught.

This was in a street with homes under lights and a busy thoroughfare street, although admittedly near parkland around a school [scrub and hedges are always a drawcard for rapists and thieves].

Did the residents open the door in the first place or did the intruders bash it in? A bit late now for these poor people but we always alarm the perimeter entrances (and unoccupied areas) to our house when we are at home in case such an event should ever happen. I hear that cameras hooked up to the internet (with appropriate warning signs) are a good deterrent also.

I have an aboriginal clubbing stick by the bed too, but violence is very likely to backfire.

There is a lot of precedent when it comes to home invaders getting their comeuppance, here’s a recent one;

http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/grandfather-had-right-to-selfdefence-police-20090219-8bqk.html

When I was growing up in Melbourne, I remember there was the story of an elderly gent who had had his house burgled, so the next night he lay in wait with his trusty .303 and ambushed the thieves, killed them both I think and after a lot of threats of jail time, he walked.

Any court that jails someone for topping these scumbags as they kick your door down would be sending the worst possible message to the community, i.e. you must lay down and submit to the home invader. Aint going to happen in this country, not while my arse points to the ground anyway.

Chez LSWCHP has a baseball bat for me and a short custom made hardwood pacifier for Mrs LSWCHP.

Home invaders not welcome here.

As Captain RAAF says, unfortunately the guns aren’t readily accessible, but particularly stupid and/or persistent hoods could find themselves in trouble.

Surely the po-po can just check the firearms licence records for this bloke and pick him up?………..oh yeah, that’s right, only the honest people with licences were stupid enough to hand their guns back!

Keep a large sword handy by the front door (guns take too long to remove from safe, load and blow crims away with). 4 foot of Narsil into the chest will not only assist in fending of the Orc hoardes but will also really slow down your average home invader and it’s also too heavy for the little kiddies to play with and hurt themselves, it’s win/win!

Except the bit about unreasonable force in defending yourself.

Um, Speedy, a pair of blokes armed with a firearm and a large knife start kicking your door in and you kill them in the entrance to your home with a firearm, sword, herring or a broken carton of milk, I guarantee you will walk!

The court will ask why you chose the sword/gun, “It was the first thing I saw when they started kicking my door in and it was close by, ‘I had been cleaning the shotgun on the table and had some ammo on a shelf nearby that I had forgotten to put in my safe….I know that is illegal, I am prepared to be punished for not securing ammunition”

They will ask why you didn’t flee, “because my wife and kids were frozen stiff with fear on the floor, I was worried that they would be killed…..and then one of the men yelled ‘I am going to kill all of you and rape your wife then eat your baby and screw your dog, so then I knew I had to stay and protect them……all I saw when they started to get through the door was a gun and a knife and I shouted at them that I had a sword/gun but they just said they will take it from me and kill kittens/shoot cops with it….I told them again to leave as they knocked down the last of the door and they just laughed, then when they charged at me I just pulled the trigger of my Franchi Spas 12, forgetting it was on semi-auto, I have a permit btw, and they died……my family was safe now….your honour!

I have a pair of tin snips with one blade half snapped off next to my door. Do I need to upgrade then??

I have a iceaxe hanging by the front door. Can’t wait to see the face of any home invader at my place…

This would not have happened if we did not have the gun buy back.

I’m interested to know which area of Gungahlin this happened in, as i also live in gungahlin and often go walking around 9pm..

I think it’s high time hoodies were banned!

Terrifying!
