Gungahlin residents are now able to benefit from a brand new leisure centre which include pool and gym facilities which was opened today by Chief Minister, Katy Gallagher and Minister for Sport and Recreation, Andrew Barr.
“Gungahlin is the fastest growing part of our city and residents of Gungahlin have been looking forward to the opportunity of having a facility such as this close to their homes.
“I have no doubt that this facility, which includes heated indoor pools and a gym, will be well used all year round.
The new $28 million aquatic complex features a 50 metre and a 25 metre program pool, a children’s water play area as well as a gymnasium, short term childcare and a cafe. The centre will be managed in partnership with the YMCA, the ‘Y’, a not-for-profit charity, focused on providing fitness programs for the entire community.
“Previously residents in the growing suburbs of Gungahlin have had to travel to Dickson or Belconnen for a similar facility and this new centre will make it easier for people to cool off in summer or exercise without travelling too far from their homes or work.
“A key priority of the ACT Government is to invest in facilities that will make it easier for people to live a healthy and active lifestyle and the Gungahlin Leisure Centre is the latest addition to active lifestyle infrastructure in Canberra.”
Minister for Sport and Recreation Andrew Barr said the new facility is an example of the ACT Government’s commitment to delivering high quality sport infrastructure in the territory.
“The ACT Government has invested $28.7 million in the design and construction of this state of the art facility and I know that many in the community, including the Gungahlin Community Council, have provided input throughout the process, to make this a truly wonderful community facility.
“Along with the recently opened Gungahlin Enclosed Oval, the residents of Gungahlin now have outstanding sporting and recreational facilities that compliment the learning and leisure opportunities offered by the Gungahlin Library and Gungahlin College in the precinct.”
