Gungahlin mosque gets the go ahead

Nothing on the relevant websites but the Canberra Times has word that ACTPLA have approved the Gungahlin Mosque:

In their assessment of the development, ACT planners found surrounding roads could cope with traffic generated by the mosque and that the proposed 43 on-site parking spaces were sufficient.

Planners also said several objections to the mosque on religious and cultural grounds were found to be “irrelevant” and “unsubstantiated”.

“Some of the representations included statements or reports concerning lack of community integration, assimilation, differences in faiths and beliefs, differences in worldviews, security concerns, perceptions about values and sources of funding and alleged links between members of the Muslim community and/or adherents of the Islamic faith to crime, organised crime, violence and terrorism and the like,” chief planning executive David Papps said in his report.

“Many of them were found to be irrelevant because they did not relate to the ACT Muslim community.

“Many were also unsubstantiated (largely drawn from internet sources), incapable of verification or matters of opinion.”

ACTPla also found the new mosque was necessary to cater to Canberra’s growing Muslim population.

Now all the bigots can cry into their weeties and launch their interminable court appeals.

UPDATE 29/08/12 17:40: And thanks to a reader who’d lodged a submission in support here’s the decision:

No we don’t.

Yes we do.

You’re both wrong.

Oh look, this isn’t an argument. It’s just contradiction!

Instead of building more mosques, churches, etc, we should be building more psychiatric facilities because if you believe in God, Allah, Santa or whoever, you are suffering from a serious mental illness.

Good on you, adding some intellectual rigour to the debate

Just because I believe I’ll be worm food when I die doesn’t mean I’m not intelligent. How about those geniuses that believe they’ll get 72 virgins when they die? Or those who reckon they’ll be floating on clouds playing harps?

If an atheist hears a voice in their head telling them to build a boat and collect two of every animal – they’d be committed to the nearest mental health facility. Just sayin’…

Are you sure about that? If he is not breaking any laws and is not a danger to himself or others it’s just a harmless hobby. Also it is the current trend to “mainstream” the mentally ill into the general population. You may be “just sayin'” but your sayin’ wrong

My comment was in recognition that deliberately saying something inflammatory rather than adding anything to a debate is trolling.

Putting Santa aside for one moment (although saying that most children in the western world under the age of about nine should be in a mental health facility doesn’t do you any favours) you do seem to have an inordinate amount of faith that what you believe in is correct. To say that people are insane to believe in anything else suggests that you are a zealot who insists that his way is the one true way, the only way to think. it also demonstrates that you are completely intolerant of people who think differently than you.

See where I’m going here?

I apologise for the Santa call – my bad. I just threw the big, red bloke in there as an after thought. Kids should be allowed to have fun with Santa, Easter bunny and tooth fairy. Although smart kids eventually grow up and stop believing in these mythical characters.

I still stand by my comments about about belief in the other fictional characters (God and Allah) by adults (kids don’t know any better).

Yeah…. clearly people like Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King Jr, William Wilburforce, J. R. R. Tolkien, Galileo, Isaac Newton, Pascal and Descartes were suffering from a serious mental illness.

Meanwhile, what have you managed to achieve while being of “sound mind”?

Since I am a huge Tolkien fan I have to admit the guy was pretty batshit crazy to come out with such awesome stories.

Mother Theresa was a disgraceful, disgusting human being, to quote the late, great Hitch, she was not a friend of the poor. She was a friend of poverty. She said that suffering was a gift from God. She spent her life opposing the only known cure for poverty, which is the empowerment of women and the emancipation of them from a livestock version of compulsory reproduction.

What is the difference between a religious person and a man who believes he has an imaginary friend?

They both believe their special friend exists.
They both talk to their special friends as if they were there.
They are both emotionally attached to their special friend.

Why don’t we have two places of worship next to each other?

Gungahlin can be the city of worship. Put a Jewish Synagogue next to the mosque, and a Catholic church across next to a Hillsong church, Buddhist temple and Hindu temple.

I would LOVE to see how that turns out. Wouldn’t this be the epitome of multiculturalism?

Cool! The design looks nice too, fits in with the general Gungahlin vibe.

Good. Isn’t it nice to read the reasoned language of the decision next to all the feral nonsense we’ve been hearing?

I’ve bought some halal popcorn for this occasion. Please wait while I put it in the microwave.

What is halal popcorn? Isn’t halal only used to describe meat prepared under Islamic rules?

No

I bought some Asian two minute noodles from Coles a few years back which had Halal symbols on the packs.

I think Canberrans just love to argue for argument’s sake.

Look at the shitstorm that this mosque proposal has caused. Now that it’s approved, everyone’s like “meh, what’s the next issue to argue about? Oh, wtf is up with that dental healthcare proposal?!”

Now we’re down to talking about halal popcorn.

Halal whilst commonly used to describe meat and meat products is simply a term used to state that the item in question is acceptable for a muslim to use in a prescribed way in accordance to their particular brand of Islam.

Whilst I myself are of no faith (that does not however stop me from enjoying some of the festivals and traditions which various religions provide) I have to say I’m glad the mosque has got the go ahead, and the intolerant of society have been told where to go in no uncertain terms.

Halal popcorn would, I imagine, be about the oil used (unless you have an air popper)

Don’t think it’s that narrow. Some food colouring and additives are haram; cf Kosher.

Excellent, they will need $2 million to proceed, Mosque details and donation at http://www.cmc-au.org/

I am neither for nor against this mosque. As a person with no religious denomination, I am intolerant of all sorts of religious zealots. What will give me the shits is if the mosque becomes too “loud” with certain views—public speeches in their courtyard, large banners, etc. I am not against Muslims, as I would just be annoyed with a “Jesus Saves” or “What would Jesus do?” banners.

I do hope more middle eastern restaurants open up though!

This makes me happy. Not only for the ghungalin muslim community but also becuase its going to cause a bunch of intolerant morons rage.
