Budget pre-announcement continues today with an upgrade to Gungahlin’s fenced oval in the form of a grandstand courtesy of Andrew Barr.

I am pleased to announce that $6.5 million has been allocated in this year’s budget for the construction of a new grandstand at the Gungahlin Enclosed Oval.

To be built on the western side of the oval, the grandstand will provide covered seating for 580 people and open seating for a further 850. It will also provide four team change rooms, two officials’ change rooms, public toilets, a first aid room, kiosk, club room and storage facilities.

The grandstand’s design is complete and the Development Application has been approved, allowing work to commence towards the end of this year while the grassing and associated landscaping is occurring at the oval.

So by being able to accommodate all football codes at senior level I guess that means it’s a massive AFL field, and everyone else can put their posts in the middle. There are five codes of football played in the ACT, and at least two of them have half decent women’s leagues, making that 7 leagues, assuming there’s only one club of each in Gungahlin (which may not be the case). I’d like to know how one field will cater for all of those. There are only two days in a weekend.
And another thing, $6.5m should build one hell of a grandstand!! Can’t wait to see it.

Soccer, Aussie Rules, League, Union and what? Is there a Gridiron comp?

I agree that a field to suit all codes would be ideal but it is impossible. It should have just been rectangular and a separate upgrade made to the ovals at Amaroo. Unless they plan to keep it for cricket in the summer? In which case, oval may have been the better choice.

Cranky: The sporting ground accomodates 4-5 football codes (possibly cricket as well). 6.5 Million will service multiple community sporting clubs. 1 racetrack won’t do that. Canberra is too small for a racetrack. Especially when (as farnarkler mentioned) there is a major one just up the road.

Would anyone else like to see a hockey ground somewhere in Gunners? I know it won’t happen with Lyneham just down the road but all ACT Hockey matches are played at Lyneham or Tuggers. A third location would be nice but doubt id ever happen.

So no-one would have a problem if the Raiders and Brumbies played in Goulburn each home game?

Cranky, Wakefield Park is only an hour away.

$6.5 mill would do wonders for local motorsport.
