Simon Corbell has announced that at the midpoint of his firearm amnesty 66 guns have been surrendered including 9 prohibited weapons:

    “I am very encouraged to see Canberrans getting involved in the amnesty and continuing to make our community a safe place to live,” said Mr Corbell.

    “Often these firearms are not obtained for illegal purposes, but are simply discovered in old homes or properties.

    “66 firearms in a small jurisdiction like the ACT is a positive half way result,” he said.

    Some of the prohibited firearms that have been surrendered include:

    — A Gevarm AR7 rifle;
    — M1 Carbine semi automatic rifle;
    — Pistol Fabrique Nationale Baby Browning;
    — Semi automatic Single Barrel Shotgun Sportco 103.

The amnesty runs until 31 May.

Oh well it’s not even fun if you are all just going to be silly about it.

Fine, I can be silly too.

Deckard – I don’t think it necessarily has to be a conspiracy. It does have the side effect of taking away the last resort defence against Government tyranny.

Just ask the jews in Germany, oh you can’t.

YES GODWIN’S LAW! If you lads won’t be rational, then neither shall I!

Actually the Nazi’s did disarm the citizenry. And many jewish ghetto’s did take up arms in resistance. Some even lasted a week or two. Little bit of trivia for ya there.

OK, so I have found someone’s theroy that the gun was previously destroyed.

Also, one of the guns used by Martin Bryant in Port Arthur was handed in at an amnesty to be destroyed, then sold onto the black market by someone trusted to destroy it. I hope the verification that weapons have actually been destroyed is a bit more accurate these days.

I just read some legit accounts, and some sites I would classify as “whacky conspiracy nutbags”, and none of them included this detail. I would suggest that it is not true.

A lot come in illegally thanks to the international narcotics trade.

Then there’s the ex-military stuff which is reported as destroyed, but is not.

This is all a conspiracy to disarm the population so that when the UN create their one world government it will be easier for them to enforce it upon us.

or something like that…

I liked Sammy Lukis quote on Sunday Sunrise a couple of weeks back… “the right to bare arms makes about as much sense as the right to arm bears”.

Really? She said “bare arms”…not “bear arms”?

So now I have to wear long sleeved shirts everywhere?

Lucky it’s coming into winter I guess.

You forgot to mention the tracking chips implanted in our bodies.

Actually, that’s a pretty cool shotgun. Perfect for personal protection…

I use it to kill Cylons. Did you know they look just like us now?

Shouldn’t you have left that with the fleet to be flown into the sun? Only the good Cylons live among us now.

Well yes, there is obviously a lot that fall into those categories, whether old or new.

But I was thinking more of the hundreds of thousands of rifles and shotguns, imported legally that must be in cupboards. I have no particular issue with there existance, but am curious to know how effective the big buyback after the late ’90s changes to gun laws were.

i do hope that a lot of the illegal weapons were surrendered back then. Though, i didn’t even know there was an amnesty at the moment.

Nothing so simple.

A lot come in illegally thanks to the international narcotics trade.

Then there’s the ex-military stuff which is reported as destroyed, but is not.

Once that is done, someone should be able to cross reference against the number registered, or reported destroyed to get at least an idea of how many might still be out there.

Someone must have stat’s on how many were imported during the ’70s and ’80s before they started modern registration

Current import and registration records date back to the late 1950’s
They are currently being transferred from paper to a series of 1’s and 0’s.

As a police officer explained to me. Atleast when a person points a gun you know he is a baddie rather than a person who has made a rash mistake with an available gun.

I suppose you cannot really argue with that logic.

Umm, ok. When and where?

Is there any evidence that these type of amnesties have any impact at all on rates of gun-related homicide or suicide? Accidental shootings?

Thinking about our recent local executions, would the perps have been the sort of people who are inclined to voluntarily surrender their weapons? Apparently not.

Does anyone know if the police do any checking of the guns to see if they were used in any unsolved murders etc? Or is it a truly “no questions asked” kinda thing?

I wonder some times about just how many guns are out there. Someone must have stat’s on how many were imported during the ’70s and ’80s before they started modern registration?

I am thrilled that there are 66 less guns out there.
