No lectures please about how I should get outside the exercise or just pick up some weights and do it at home. I just prefer to do it indoors.

Having recently moved to Canberra I’m not sure what is available.

Though I’ve seen a Fitness First in the city and have been a member of their chain elsewhere, I’d like to know what other places are out there?

I’m middle aged, like to do the odd class, trot on the treadmill, occasionally lift some light weights. Nothing obsessive. Any suggestions?

Avoid ANU, it’s massively oversubscribed – students aren’t the issue either.
You have no chance of getting through much of a workout in less than two hours if you’re coming in after work. Even during the day it’s very busy relative to the other places I’ve been to since leaving uni.

Flames in North Lyneham seem very good. Expensive, but good.

I’m sure OP doesn’t have nits. Not ones that want to work out, anyway.

🙂 No nits. But now I feel itchy….ewww. Thanks everyone, I ended up at Northside Fitness in Dickson primarily because they open early in the morning and offer classes throughout the day that fit with my odd working hours. I checked out quite a few places and their prices were all pretty similar.

I know there is a gym a Civic pool, which is linked to the one at tuggeranong pool. Its OK and may suit your taste and nits usually pretty cheap and has direct debits weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

They recently replaced all the equipment at tuggers, but I’ve not been to Civic pool gym for a while.

+1 for Club Lime. They normally have some pretty good membership promos. I’m a Club Lime member and I’ve had no issues at all. I go to Gold Creek.

The gym at the Australian Insitute of Sport is excellent. It is central, free parking, cheap monthly rates and no contracts to lock you in.

Uni Lodge 4 is currently being built and should be open next year, “word on the street” is that it will have a gym and indoor heated pool. Something to investigate?

Theres a Fernwood in Civic too if you’re a female who likes to pay through the nose to workout with other females.

Club Lime is pretty good. Their equipment is up to date and they have 6 locations to choose from. Gungahlin, Belconnen, CISAC, Mawson, Gold Creek and Kaleen. Plenty of tread mills and light weights. I’d recommend going straight to heavy weights as muscles are sexy.

Try Northside Fitness at Dickson. Moderate in price, well run and a wide age range of people

ANU (if you are a graduate from any university). Pretty big, good range, not pretentious. Well, full of 20yr old boys who think they are cool, but being middle aged you know how to ignore them. However, the classes might be a bit more limited than in some of the larger gyms. Can get busy at 5pm and you dont get fluffy towels (or any towels) or ‘trainers’ walking around trying to help you. Despite being a uni gym there are plenty of middle aged people who go – you will be outnumbered by students but wont feel out of place.

there are some ’24 hour fitness’ popping up around the place – one in Dickson, one in Civic. They are good because you dont pay for classes you never use and so are cheaper. Unless, of course, you want classes.

I havent been to the northside gym (at the Dickson squash club) for a few years, but it was pretty good. Much smaller than, say, FF, but not many people go.

There’s a 24 hour gym in Civic. No classes just weights and cardio equipment.

Club lime is really good on price. And their CISAC branch in Bruce is huge with a pool as well.
