No, that doesn’t work either. Now I’m really confused ….

Good point, WMC! I really need to be much more hoopy.

: )

He’s a really hoopy frood.

‘Hoopy’ is a noun.

Looks like a nice way to spend some time this weekend . . . ‘Xmas is coming, the geese are getting fat, please put a penny in the old man’s hat’ and all that . . .

Well, I think you’re wonderful. We’ll have an excellent day.

Handmademarket5:08 pm 18 Nov 08

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger Granny!

Thanks for asking

Are you ok, Market Girl?

He’s a really hoopy frood.

Be sure to bring plenty of water and a towel

As the Ford Prefect says, never leave home without your towel.

Genie, in answer to your “why don’t you work together with the existing markets” remark, don’t have time to troll back over all the explanations on why your assumption is wrong when it’s already been answered before. Just have a look back over some of the previous posts here on the topic, or on the GCC website http://www.gcc.asn.au – just pop the word markets into the little search field at the top.

MSG: yeah ‘mazing ain’t it? We were blessed with a massive expanse of paving in the middle of our town instead of landscaping and grass like we asked for, and were told to suck it up cos it would be a bril place for markets. And when someone wants to expand on (not compete with) the existing small markets, with the support of the surrounding retailers and the community and the existing market operators, the ACT bureaucracy blockades it at every turn. Sore nerve I guess.

I am looking forward to the Handmade Markets, and really hoping that they live up to expectations.

Be sure to bring plenty of water and a towel, that way you’ll be able to cover your face and get out when the riot police fill the joint with tear gas.

Once again finally to all you Gungahlin residents – there is already a perfectly good market operating monthly at the Marketplace.. Yes it needs a little bit more work and alot more of your support. So why would you want to ruin someone elses market to start up your own in Gungahlin. Why not work together?? To me it seems like the most of you only care about yourselves – and not looking at the bigger picture of supporting ALL marketstall holders and the charities that give stallholders the chance to sell their items.

Come to think about it – I believe the Gungahlin Marketplace Market is on this Saturday. How slack of you to not even support the closest market to where you live.

Come to think of it, why don’t you just mind your own damn business and stop telling me where to shop and how to live?

I never knew there was such passionate angst to be found in the world of markets…..

No i’m just now really curious as to where the missing $4000 is !? If you have to spend THAT much money advertising something – then its a waste of money. Why spend 80%+ on putting on an event – especially when it is for charity.

I can’t stand people who rip of charities. Market Girl is claiming profits are donated, but at $110 per stall and lets say 50 stalls thats $5500, but only $1000 has been raised.

Disappointing in my eyes.

Doubt you can even imagine the effort it is to make things then run a market stall, neverlone organise the entire market like Market Girl is.

I am a market stall holder… Have been for 5+ years. Also attended Hall Markets for all these years and still only pay the $35 fee. I am also fully aware of how much effort it takes to run and organise a market. I have assisted in running several markets over the years, which is why I find your concept of a market appauling. Charging $110 is only looking out for yourself and not the stallholder.

Of course she would be anonymous with her tail between her legs, you coward!!

As for being anonymous, I have been a regular of the RiotACT for a few years now – why change my name or announce to everyone who I am for your benefit. Also if you wern’t Newbies you would also realise that most weeks I post on the Wots On Guide of Markets that aren’t normally advertised and spread the word of the lesser known markets. And every Month that Hall is on – you’ll see me advertising it.

As for comparing your Market to Bus Depot Markets. I’m not the one who mentioned Bus Depot to start with – I have never supported this Market and never plan to.

Need some pics to slap some Molonglo MLAs around with to get the Gungahlin site happening.

What is with you Genie?? Too much time on your hands?? You seem to be getting very personal here so all i can assume is that you are one hell of a boring & negative person, with nohting more to do than knock a fantastic opportunity for creative small businesses & Christmas gift buying atmosphere. Doubt you can even imagine the effort it is to make things then run a market stall, neverlone organise the entire market like Market Girl is.

Let me list some of you complete myths about market stalls around the ACT. FYI to have an outdoor stall at Old Bus Depot, in the heat of Summer in November & December, if you haven’t done more than 20 markets that year, blah blah blah, is over $70 (more for indoors, double stalls, corners, power outlet etc, see a million variations & price additions, restrictions etc, so get your facts right!!) & they aren’t supporting any charity other than the odd free stall to a charity who has to do all the work.

I also attend Hall, yes, it’s run by lovely people, funds for charity & close to my Gungahlin home, stalls are $44 outside in the dusty paddock (more for large & indoor sites).

You barely see an advertisement for either, they’re not “Special Events”, particularly exclusive OR in the glorious Albert Hall. Can i also make the point of how happy we stall holders were to pay our fees, as finally someone in Canberra is creating a special event for our handmade wares.

How dare you imply that the Handmade Market organiser who is saying she is raising funds for MND, is taking profit from the number of stalls x stall price?? Apart from hall hire, you have considered her costs, primarily ADVERTISING in all its forms – ads, banners, postcards etc?? So give her a break, in fact, give us all a break. I hope every person reading this is hyped up, ready to support Handmade & bring 100 friends each along.

Don’t you all just wonder if Genie does come along to see what all the up-market fuss is about?? Of course she would be anonymous with her tail between her legs, you coward!!

Now i have more sewing to do & a loving family to attend to, this is no longer worth my time. Support Handmade, support MND, support our wonderful organiser Julie who has put MONTHS of work into this & lost a family member to MND. Don’t bother posting another message Genie, there is certainly nothing positive, fun or magical about you, no matter what you call yourself. Regards, Jennie

Okay, Genie, we love Market Girl here in Gungahlin. Are you pickin’?

Gungahlin Al2:39 pm 18 Nov 08

Don’t feed the trolls Jules.
Apples/oranges/equipment/blah blah.
Don’t like it Genie, don’t take up a stall?
Or to paraphrase one of the RA taglines – set up your own damn market.
Should be there – need some pics to slap some Molonglo MLAs around with to get the Gungahlin site happening.

Handmademarket2:38 pm 18 Nov 08

Hey Genie it is a shame you have spent so much time getting it so wrong!

If only you could use your power for good instead of evil!

I am actually very proud of what I have raised and achieved. All of this is done on my own so therefore I cannot be a charity but I can give to charity, why you ask would anyone do that? Because I have had too many family members die of this disease.

Thanks for letting everyone know about Handmade this weekend though!

Ok so the negative biatch has more to say:

Over $1,000 has been raised so far with more to come on the day.

There are over 50 designers who feel the cost of a stall at Handmade will be well worth the effort. They have made an amazing contribution to helping spread the word about handmade.

That’s right, I am not making a profit from this event

Only $1000 has been raised… But people are paying $110 a pop and you have clearly stated that you have over 50 stalls… where is the other odd $4000.. You can’t tell me its has cost that much to hire Albert Hall and the advertising. Seems like a shame to me if you have indeed wasted that extra cash.

I’m all for supporting charities, Hall Markets supports Hartley Lifecare and only charge $35 for handmade goodies, also usually the local RFS are standing at the car parks taking donations too. The local trash and treasures support Lions and Rotary and pretty sure they charge no more than $15 a car park.

This time of year Schools and Aged Car facilities are having fetes and are only asking for small donations of around $25. The Black Mountain Special School O’Connor are trying to raise funds at their fete this Saturday for new equipment, as is the Salvation Army Mountain View Aged care Facility on Friday.

Do you have any idea how much stalls at the Old Bus Depot cost in November & December??

As far as I’m aware – no where near the $110 asking price. I can also go down the Tuggers Hyperdome and set up shop there for $110 a day and it would be more worthwhile.

FINALLY I would like to point out that the OXFAM Christmas Fair is on the 29th November 10am-4pm – Guess what AT ALBERT HALL for only the bargain price of $35 a stall. A 1/3 of what your asking price is. Yet another charity to donate too that don’t seem to be to greedy. They too will have 50+ stalls.

So I guess all up for just $10 over your asking price, Stall holders can go out and support 4 different charities (Salvo’s Aged care Fete $25 21/11, Black Mountain Special School $25 22/11, OXFAM $35 29/11, Hartley Lifecare at Hall $35 7/12) over the next 3 weekends. I say spread the love !

What’s with the attitude Genie?? This is not only supporting dozens of people expressing themselves creatively, clever & talented mummies who chose to stay home with their children & do a crafty business on the side, & raise funds for MND . . . so why would you knock such an event??

Handmade & Julie the organiser, is JUST what Canberra needs. Canberra is a city of many singles & families coming for a couple of years with work, then leaving, so they know what great markets are out there interstate. This is the style of market many small businesses have been dying to attend for years!!

So to all the other open minded, happy & friendly people out there, please come along & join us on the day. Lots of eye candy, atmosphere & festive build up. All about small business, handmade loveliness & good cheer.

FYI $110 is a reasonable price to pay for a well advertised, friendly & organised market in the Christmas Gift buying rush. It sets a particular standard & hello – 50 stall holders are more than happy to pay that, doesn’t that speak louder than Genie?? Do you have any idea how much stalls at the Old Bus Depot cost in November & December??

So write up your shopping list, get some ideas from the Handmade website list of designers & come ready to see the most fantastic gift choices around.

Buy Lovely, Locally & support small business. Regards, Jennie, of Posie Patchwork, Edna&AliceMay Vintage Sensibility, Peggy-Jean Cards & sTaRt oF FaShiOn children, & Gungahlin mother of 4 in my spare time

Good Morning Genie,

so glad to have such an insightful positive person so interested in the fundraising efforts being done for Motor Neurone Disease. That’s right, I am not making a profit from this event. handmade is designed to raise the profile of designers in the region and MND.

Market Girl

Wow at $110 a pop for stallholders I think they are going to need all the support they can get.

What a rip off….

Handmademarket12:11 pm 13 Nov 08

Here is your 1 week to go reminder!!
There are over 50 stalls of the most fantastic handmade goods.

Mmmm so much for spell check!

Handmade Market is indeed raising funds for MND. I will also be running a stall at the Old Bus Depot markets on the 26th Oct selling MND goods to raise money for them as their ACT group is very low on help. Come and say hello!

The Handmade Market website has a newsletter that will send you lovely people a reminder!
http://www.handmademarket.com.au

I will keep you all up to date right here as well.

Cheers
Marketgirl

P.S Granny thanks, it’s been a while since I was cool!

It’ll show up in our events listing… bottom right of the page…

This sounds like a great Christmas shopping opportunity. Could you post a reminder closer to the time please? I have the memory span of a goldfish.

Handmademarket is a really cool person, and am even considering going myself if not double-booked. There is some nice stuff on that website and they even support the association for Motor Neurone Disease.

Shouldn’t it be ‘Commomwelf’?
