As someone who doesn’t like the idea of jumping off things, seeing this hang gliding video is a little disturbing but it also makes it look very relaxed, until the landing.

Footage taken by some hang gliders at Spring Hill just north of Canberra over the weekend.

I would point out that while this was no doubt the worst landing EVER and in very turbulent conditions, the pilot sustained absolutely no injuries nor did the trusty wing. It’s very difficult to break a hang glider and near impossible in the air… they just don’t fall out of the sky. The result here was a large grin on said pilot’s face.

Nobody much likes the idea of jumping off things that are more than a metre or so off the ground, this is a survival instinct we all share. Most people are afraid of heights, even hang glider pilots. It’s about rationalising fear and I would suggest that hang gliding is plenty safer than riding a bicycle on the road.

But most people dream (at least as a child) of flying like a bird, with birds. And you CAN live your dreams, even if the world tells you otherwise. If you’ve dreamt of safe free flight and want to avoid regret, hang gliding is for you.

Most people can learn to hang glide — it’s not expensive, doesn’t require any special skill, strength OR nerve. Really.

NOTE: hang gliders are very different things to parachuting, skydiving and paragliding. For all things that fly, speed = control = safety. There is nothing quite like a rigid wing structure that is built much stronger than general aviation aircraft, which flies exactly as birds do. At this point I won’t go on about flying with Wedgetail Eagles or dancing with fluffy white clouds…
