The ABC is reporting on extraordinary straight talk from Minister Hargreaves in the Assembly as he discussed plans to improve Canberra’s woefull taxi system.

He told the Legislative Assembly he is unimpressed by complaints from existing operators.

“Well bad luck, simply bad luck, the people in this town have waited too long for a decent taxi service and we will be releasing more plates as the demand goes,” he said.

“We will be fining where lack of service standard adherence and Mr Speaker if that doesn’t work then we will go and investigate another taxi service for this town.”

One hopes the Minister doesn’t need a taxi anytime soon.

to be fair though the cabs get away with it because we have access to second rate public transport

We need more competition. Not deregulation as you don’t want some sort of dodgy mini-cab industry to emerge but there need to be more plates and a rival to the shocking Canberra Cabs.

Instead of fining operators and imposing service ‘standards’ (either of which won’t work) – here’s a novel idea: DEREGULATE THE TAXI INDUSTRY. Twit.

Our company doesn’t even bother with local cabs – we use hire cars, our own cars, or drive each other as needed. Cabs in this town are crap.

Onya Thumper – our cab service is plain embarassing when held up against most of the other capitals.
