Hargreaves on Greens and Stanhope

Page 3 of this week’s CityNews is sadly missing bikini girls (or even boys).

But it does have an astonishing interview by Jorian Gardner with Labor’s John Hargreaves. (I have checked with Jorian and he confirmed that the interview was, in fact, conducted after lunch for whatever that may be worth).

Right up the top is the curious belief that the Greens are occupying seats that belong to the Labor party:

“I will be looking forward to leading the team in Brindabella at the next election to take back the seat that is rightfully Labor’s.”

And there’s far too much information about how he views the relationship with the Greens:

“It’s sort of like a fantasy world between an engagement and a marriage, and it ain’t quite either,” he said, “It’s slightly more than platonic but I wouldn’t say it’s kissing and cuddling though.”

Possibly more interesting is when the conversation turns to the subject of the Labor leadership. After some strangeness and evasion the last line comes through loud and clear:

“What I will say is that I give Jon Stanhope as much loyalty as he gives me.”

Youch.

UPDATE: The article is now online in its own right.

FURTHER UPDATE: Brendan Smyth is beside himself with excitement in response to this edition of CityNews hitting the streets.

Labor are all about social engineering, addressing the needs they want the community to have.

I reckon JH has been sat in his ass more than once in his life with his big mouth carry on

Labor are all about social conscience – addressing the needs of the community
Yeah right. School closures.

What an arrogant PRICK.

AGAIN.

He has a face and stupid grin that just invites a good old-fashioned slapping.

The fact that Hargreaves is still in cabinet means that Stanhope gives this drongo far more loyalty than he has ever deserved.

Absolutely, he long ago deserved a back bench spot and has kept portfolios when surely many advisers are telling the CM otherwise. I think JH had been on a liquid lnch…again.

A crafty journo would take Hargreaves out for a slap-up lunch, THEN do the i/v!

And I’m not sure that this didn’t happen…

Hargreaves always seems to say what he really thinks, and then he thinks about it later, and possibly wishes he hadn’t said it.

It could suggest there is an honest man lurking in there.

Or simply that he is a twit…

Seeing it was after lunch Jorian may heve taken a bit of poetic licence for purposes of interpretation.

But it could also have been exquisite timing in getting lucid comments before the lunch effect kicked in.

The Liberals were always ‘born to rule’, Labor obviously now wants in on the action too.

I remember back when when I was a kid it was the liberals who were ‘born to rule.’

May I ask, how old is he? I’m not sure if it’s formal or not, but it’s very rare to have a Labor MP elected if they’re over 65. How old will he be in 3 years’ time?

At what point did any seat anywhere become rightfully Labour’s. Isnt it our job to decide who is the rightfull owner. Isnt that what elections are for. What an arrogant PRICK.
