John Hargreaves has announced that the survey he commissioned has duly reported back that Canberrans are thrilled with the state of their parks. Sadly it would seem the survey didn’t run to ovals and other public spaces which generally fill the park-like space in our minds.

Apparently 11.9 million visits were made to “Canberra’s town and district parks in 2005-06” (so the stats are only to the end of the last financial year nine months ago?)

There was one interesting tid-bit: Black Mountain Peninsular, Weston park and Glebe Park are the most visited parks in Canberra. Do they count BMP’s nocturnal visitors in these numbers? Personally I’m surprised the John Knight park didn’t do better.

We in Gungahlin like our smallish dysfunctional parks so that we cannot endanger ourselves with a game of kicking a ball ir setting up a wicky, If someone could mow the foreshore down at the pond in Nicholls (near Palmerston) we may risk going near the water.

We received a call from the mob that was conducting the above survey around september/october last year. The one who has to be obeyed took the call and decide to play along and answer some questions but it wasn’t too long before the what city are you calling from question was asked and the response was Sydney…..so that explains the stupid questions relating to enough trees in your local park (could help if they water the ones that they have planted was the reponse)and would you be willing to volunteer to keep your local park clean (so the $200 rate increase isn’t enough to pay for the services we should be getting but aren’t). you really don’t have a clue do you?, we live in Gungahlin. So couldn’t F Troop find a local firm with local knowledge to do the job?

Spelling lesson – no ‘r’ on the end of Peninsula folks.

emd you are so right. My understanding is Weston Park is looked after by NCA? Why is the local govt taking the credit?

Well of course we all visit the town and district parks more often. Because they’re not maintaining suburban parks or ovals anymore.

Nice that the figures show a steady increase! I’d love to know the survey methodology used to estimate those numbers … I bet its not precise enough for the visitor number claims to be statistically valid.

I wish they’d surveyed me – I would have told them to bring back the rubbish bins!
