The Canberra Times has word that Labor factional warlord and champion luncher is calling time on his career in the Legislative Assembly.

Above is some footage of Mr Hargreaves opening the Fringe festival in 2009 before later deciding to kill the whole thing off.

Ah, memories.

Sad day when we loose a character that is as Hardworking … as Johno was.

you know the post is about John Hargraves right?

I think a pseudo academic post at UC working on health reform would be a nice way for the big fella to ease into retirement…..

Yes, on drug and alcohol comorbidity. Comorbid with a lack of apparent talent or usefulness.

Good riddance. He hasn’t done anything in 5+ years and before that did nothing but f***k everything up. He should have been gone long ago. Whoever voted for him at the last election should be taken out the back and shot.

Lets set off the fireworks and have a few drinks. I thought Hargraves “retired” a few years ago. And why has he announced a random public servant as his successor? I think a pseudo academic post at UC working on health reform would be a nice way for the big fella to ease into retirement…..

I see from the picture in the CT today that Mr Hargreaves is a rabid Collingwood supporter.
If he had declared this at election times (as he should have) I would have never voted for him.
Wonder if he has a job lined up at the UN in New York like that other drink driving Labor MLA John Langmore did. I am sure there is a Labor sinecure for him out there somewhere (ANU, CU perhaps?)

I’ll see your Tharwa, GDE, fireworks, Grassby statue, Fringe Festival, DUI and raise with his responsibility for the rise of Andrew Barr and Joy Burch.

The list is getting quite long.

Loved it when, as Transport Minister (and former Police Minister), he got done for DUI. He said that he’d only had about six glasses of wine at a post-Budget event, and thought he’d still be OK to drive. Upon being asked what he intended to do, he said that he’d just have to catch cabs for a while, and then he observed: “You can never get a cab in Canberra.”

Maybe he should have written a letter to himself to complain.

What’s even funnier is that he was caught not long after he had just put an extra 30 or so cabs on the road.

Sad day when we loose a character that is as Hardworking yes colorful and controversial as Johno was!

Agreed.

Far too many bland party Apparatchiks in politics these days, people with no experience of life outside of the civil service and party machine, chosen for their blind obedience to party line.

Look at the sad bunch of alleged politicians who will be left after Hargreaves leaves, would you go for a beer with any of them?

There’s not one who does not leave an indelible blank on my memory.

Hargreaves was voted in…how many times y his constituents? Who are we to say they should not be allowed to make that choice.

Three letters: G D E

You know on that old skit comedy TV show (can’t remember the name), when they did the puppets, and whenever John Elliot came on there was a volley of burps? Well, whenever I see or read about John Hargreaves, I hear a sound-effect of empty bottles being tripped-over. Can’t rid myself of it.

It’s sad to reflect on how there are many energetic, passionate people in the community who would love to be in government and try to make the world a better place, but in their way for so many years was someone like this. And we complain about the quality of our politicians.

Sad day when we loose a character that is as Hardworking yes colorful and controversial as Johno was! Current personalities in today’s assembly done really leave us with much anticipation of anything really.
Ps…..Is that the old interim news director of WIN TV ? Dorian Gardiner? where did they guy go?
