Has ABC reception recently gone bad in Canberra?

In the last week my previously perfect ABC TV reception has gone bad. Its all the ABC channels – ABC1, ABC2, ABC News 24 etc.

Nothing has changed set-up wise in my house – the cables are fine, the roof mounted aerial is fine.

I’ve tried rescanning and resetting the channels but I’m getting no ABC love. Anyone else having troubles? Any fixes?

For epic lulz, check out this guy’s Twitter. It’s got a real sex pest vibe about it.

What is a “lulz”? And as for Twitter, surely it isn’t too hard to type my name into the search engine? As for a “sex pest vibe”, I hardly think endless tweets about politics, sport and the Internet filter constitutes being a “sex pest”. Perhaps you have the wrong person. Despite the unusual name there’s a few of us around.

You probably shouldn’t pick on this guy. I offended him once and he claimed to have paid a visit to the “cyber police”. Each night, I lie awake in fear that Robocop is gonna kick down my front door.

I think you hit a nerve with your “sex pest vibes” comment. No trace of him to be found on Twitter anymore…

Thanks for all the comments, folks.

Aidan, I’m located on Majura Ave in Dickson. My signal strength indicator used to be close to 100% for all the ABC channels but has dropped over the past week to 50% or below, resulting in the massive pixelation and drop outs. I haven’t changed tv’s, don’t split the signal and I’m plugged into the roof mounted aerial via a screw in type of wall socket. Absolutely nothing has changed at m end that would break a previously strong signal. Which transmitter am I pinging? No idea.

Sorry to hear it’s happening to a few others out there. Has ABC recently taken down the analogue signal? Could this be related? Not sure how it could be.

Might be worth calling Kaz and seeing if there’s anything they can do. I’d prefer not to have to watch ACA and TT while sipping my latte.

We have not had issues with ABC but the sound on the broadcast of all AFL games on channel 7 is very poor. It sounds very hollow. It happens every week and we have checked other channels at the same time and they are fine. We receive our signal via fibre from transact. Anyone else have the same problem?

I had this issue and resolved it by selecting a different sound option on my TV sound menu, i have dolby, surround, stereo, speech, opera, concert etc. just tabbed through until i found one that worked. sometimes the crowd noise dominated the announcers so i agree, it can be annoying.

I live in the inner south. I too have trouble with the ABC’s 4 digital channels, ie no signal at times.

How about a deal; no Q&A or 7:30 in exchange for an end to Today Tonight and A Current Affair?

I’ve got a better exchange. MEDIA WATCH for both TT and ACA. Think of it for a moment, if those two rubbish didn’t exist neither would Media Watch!

Haha, sure, but what about the Illawarra Mercury?

we’ve transact and abc2 often has moments where the picture pixelates a bit and stops, then resumes normal picture, but none of the other channels seem to do this. always in the middle of some particular bit, too – cranky!

The ABC is great, if you don’t like it, then suck it up! There’s plenty of other tax dollars spent on things we don’t personally approve of.

Hear, hear…………………………….absolutely!

Andrew Bolt is right. He’s always right. And the left-wing do nothing but get up to conspiracies, non-stop. Then again they have plenty of time for such things, as they are all on the dole or writing out arts grants applications.

And sipping lattes and chardonay, apparently.

They use an awful lot of big words, don’t they?

You do strike me as a person whose views are informed by the ‘rational’ voice of talk back radio. In fact I think your posts are a great arguement for more funding for the ABC

My ABC TV reception is fine but my ABC Radio reception, particularly Radio National, has been poor lately! Anyone else experience this?

I know nothing about changes at the transmitter, but regarding my receiving setup, I had to shift my antenna slightly to allow for tree growth blocking my view of Telstra Tower. Also my coax and connectors were looking a bit rough. My signal is now back to rock-solid.

Wind can adversely affect your signal. If you had a poor quality signal to begin with (hard to know with digital unless you look at the signal strength/quality indicators that are present in some tv sets/tuners) then this might be enough make it break up.

Where are you located? What transmitter are getting your signal from? Do you have line of sight? Is your aerial an existing one you plugged a digital TV into? If it is new, did you have it installed or did you do it yourself? How many times do you split the signal?

To be honest, unless you’re quite tech savvy and want to do alot of google searching, I’d get Kaz Electronics or someone similar to take a look at your system. They would probably be able to improve it.

Hmm, all seems good with ABC TV at our place (inner north).

I’m still on analogue, and the ABC reception has been terrible for some months now. Ghosts, and the sound is distorted.

We are having problems with Channel Nine mainly – lots of blackouts and dead-air. ABC for us seems to be fine.

Yes, I’ve noticed some problems with sound and picture on ABC recently. At times it’s so bad we’ve had to switch the channel.
