ACT Policing is searching for a 69 year-old man who went missing from The Canberra Hospital today (Thursday, 21 march).

Around 11.50am, the man known as ‘Mijo’ or ‘Michael’ was being assessed by hospital staff when he walked out of the hospital.

Mijo is described as 178cm (5’10”) tall, and weighs about 90kg. He has olive skin and grey, thinning hair. When he left the hospital he was wearing a grey hooded jumper and brown slippers.

ACT Policing hold serious concerns for his welfare and are urging anyone who may have seen a man matching this description to call ACT Policing on 131 444.

My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Given the circumstances the coroner will have a look at this case. If recommendations are made on the basis of any lessons here, they are likely to be good ones if past decisions are a guide.

This has appparently not ended well.

My thoughts go out to the family.

But how on earth can a walk up Hindmarsh Drive result in death? Perhaps the care offered at the hospital was inadequate?

Who knows? Perhaps he had a sense that he was dying, and didn’t want to die in an institution so, like many animals, found a corner to die in. RIP.

And while I don’t know a lot about the man or the circumstance, they probably wouldn’t have known he was going missing before he actually left.

Which might mean that they haven’t diagnosed that his mental health might be failing.

I’ve had relos who, while walking through town, suddenly looked up in surprise and couldn’t remember where he was or why he was there. Only because I was accompanying them and able to explain were they able to get their senses back. Otherwise he may have been wandering aimlessly, lost in his own town.

These things happen people… It’s all part of growing old.

Pretty simple to comprehend. They can’t stop you leaving.
