Have you seen this (well one that looks like it but greenish) car (recently)?

1960 Volkswagen Karmann GhiaThe stolen car, ACT Rego: KG 060Original ABC Online article (I have lifted the above photo of the car from the ABC, who got it from ACT Policing, but I expect as it is related to an ongoing investigation nobody will care)This rare & unique car (blue-green coupe with white wall tyres, a wooden roof rack) has been stolen in clear view of the owner, and last spotted around the Canberra Rex Hotel. The owner confronted and was subsequently assaulted by the thief, who then drove off with the car (again).Anyone with information is urged to contact Crimestoppers 1800 333 000.If you do claim the reward, share it Johnboy (to pay for his bandwidth and beer addictions) and be sure to mention The-RiotAct (so the CT is forced to mention the site) .

“drive a motor vehicle without consent”

What the hell does that mean? Sounds like someone known to the owner was involved.

The above is an ABC news update, this is the AFP media release.

I heard on the radio this afternoon that this car has now been found. Parked in the alleged thief’s driveway in Downer. You’d have to be clever to steal a car and then park it in your driveway for all the world to see!

Looks cool, needs a SBC on LPG though (could be an interesting wheelstand machine)

I had one of those – a long time ago. Red with white roof, white-walled tyres. ’67 model. 1300cc….underpowered. Big mistake to part with it.

Indeed.

Any news on whether the car has turned up yet? It’s not exactly going to be the easiest thing to turn over.

Just goes to show when confronting theives who have stolen your car flog them senseless with a blunt object first, then ask questions later.

Mmmm Karmann Ghia. What a fine looking automobile.

There’s a picture of the actual car in the CT today Mr Evil.

On related matters, I was awoken by the second high-speed police chase in as many weekends last night around Tuggeranong.

I awoke at about 1am to the sound of police sirens traveling around the suburb, lots of screeching tyres, and the revving of what sounded like a high-performance 8-cylinder vehicle as they seemingly attempted to evade police.

I wonder if it’s just this time of the year, or whether this is a regular occurrence. I’m imagining these police pursuits probably happen as a result of failure to stop at RBT stations.

The thief wont have much luck doing anything with it in Canberra. What a sucky way to have your car stolen.

I’ll keep an eye out for it.

Never fear, worried citizens: the thief is expected to ride his bicycle across a pedestrian crossing in O’Connor later this weekend. JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED.

I vaguely know that car, and it would be well known within the local Volkswagen community I’m sure.

Karmann Ghias are a lovely car and I bet the owner would have poured their heart and soul into it. I hope they get it back. 🙁

Good idea, or Jessica Cry-Baby might have to drag us over the coals in the Sunday Times for encouraging people to assualt innocent vehicle owners. 🙂

For the reason outlined above, I propose a mod edit that article to become “a 1960 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, similar to the stolen car. Stolen car rego: KG 060”

Lest some poor sap being dragged out of the above car and beaten.

I have to find this car; I really want to see what a wooden roof rack looks like.

Fair enough too 🙂
I wasn’t meaning to be critical (doesn’t surprise me that ABC would have screwed it up initally, given their track record of late), just didn’t want people pulling some poor sap out of that car and giving him what-for 🙂

The ABC article has been updated since I posted it. I went with what they had, and didn’t even think that far.

I was more concerned with Johnboy getting his bandwidth paid for, instead of his current method of standing out on Limestone Ave till 3AM asking people to lend him money for a bus and offering to shine their shoes.

Really? So you mean my eyesight isn’t as bad as I first thought?

The photo is not of the car in question – it’s of a “similar vehicle”. Note the absence of white walled tyres, a wooden roof-rack, and the fact that it’s not blue-green.

Are they worth something?

Bloody ugly thing if you ask me: looks like Maxine McKew on wheels.
