Canberrans are invited to have their say on Canberra’s taxi industry, Chief Minister Andrew Barr and Minister Shane Rattenbury have announced over the weekend.

From the media release:

Minister Shane Rattenbury and I invite Canberrans to share their views on the ACT taxi industry and how new technologies and business models can better serve the ACT.

The taxi industry is evolving. In the ACT, new technologies have already been introduced by taxi networks and we know there is potential for further innovation through digital technologies and business models. These include smartphone applications to book and track taxis and hire cars, and on-demand transport services, such as ridesharing, which can provide passengers with additional transportation choices.

Canberrans deserve an efficient, reliable public transport system that will take them where they want to go, when they want to go there. That’s why the Government is committed to delivering an integrated transport network of taxis, hire-cars, buses and light rail, complemented by ongoing improvements to our road, walking and cycling networks.

Through the Taxi Industry Innovation Review, announced in January, the ACT Government is working with providers and a range of other stakeholders to find the right way to allow such technologies and innovative approaches to benefit the Canberra community. A public Discussion Paper has been developed with the input of the local taxi and hire-car industry and stakeholders. It forms the basis for discussion and input by the entire community on this and related issues.

Minister Rattenbury said: “In order to find the best way forward for Canberra’s transport system it is important that we involve the community and give Canberrans the opportunity to have their say.”

The community consultation will give Canberrans the opportunity to provide their feedback on the current taxi system and for us to understand their views on how new technologies can offer accessible and safe passenger experiences. Canberrans want more transport options. We need to consider how the industry may change, while allowing new operators a level playing field with existing taxis and hire cars.

“Taxis, car -sharing and other demand-responsive transport options are also important for social equity, and are often relied on by those with special transport needs. To ensure that the industry best serves these users we will undertake a sample survey as part of the community consultation process,” Mr Rattenbury said.

The discussion paper is now available on the ACT Government’s Time to Talk website (www.timetotalk.act.gov.au) for consultation, which will take place for six weeks from 18 May to 29 June 2015.

What is wrong with the present system where Cabcharge overcharges everybody and uses the money to pay contributions to all the major political parties to ensure the supply of taxis is artificially restricted so that the price of licences is ridiculously high, so the required return on the investment forces up the price of fares, so that Cabcharge can overcharge everybody and use the money…

Hit the nail on the head.

Lazy entrenched rent seeking monopolists like Cabcharge are the reason Australia is going backwards economically so fast.

Rather than working hard, innovating and competing with the rest of the world, we’ve become a country where government policies support incumbent operators, who then use their privileged position to profiteer.

I hope Uber decimates the taxi industry. At least with ride sharing apps, if Uber becomes too big, there’s nothing stopping anyone from creating a competing app.

Gold. I like your style, Omar.

All I ask is that the income from a previous local service, doesn’t get monopolised and sent offshore by another US corporation. If taxi licences cost a bajlillion I don’t care as long as that money stays in Australia, sending a share offshore is just kicking another whole in a the bottom of our boat.
