Minister for Local Government, Simon Crean, has announced that the busy Allan Hawke having just finished planning the evisceration of the ACT Public Service is now going to examine the workings of the National Capital Authority:

Dr Hawke has been appointed to look at the roles and responsibilities of NCA.

“Dr Hawke is the right person for this task and this is the right time to conduct a review. It is essential that we find the correct balance between planning responsibilities between the Commonwealth and the ACT Government in the National Capital,” Mr Crean said.

“The Commonwealth will always have a keen interest in the planning of the National Capital as the seat of Government in Australia.

“Dr Hawke has extensive experience in conducting government reviews of this nature and both the ACT Government and the National Capital Authority support his appointment to undertake the review.

The concern must be that the Federales are looking for an excuse to spend even less on the upkeep of Canberra.

Dr Hawke has until June 2011 to get a report back to the Government.

Better hope this Hawke fellow isn’t a fan of the Brodburger!

Here’s a hint for you, Gary Rake, if you survive this next purge. How about treating Canberra citizens with some respect and decency, and take into account their views when there are contentious issues. Then perhaps, just maybe, they might come to your defence when there is a review.

But if you treat everyone adversely affected by your decisions with contempt, as you do, then suddenly you find yourself very lonely and very isolated when Dr Hawke does his surgery on you.

The “Planners” in Canberra (those who haven’t died from Old Age, illness or taken a Package) are still pissed off that the Federal Government closed down the NCPA (National Capital Planning Authority) in 1988. Some Planners went to the ACTPLA and others went to the NCA. Canberra doesn’t need 2 Planning Authorities, one for local ACT land and the other for “Commonwealth” land”. In fact it doesn’t need a Planning Authority at all, it just needs “some people” within the ACT Government …. there is, actually, no real “planning” involved. It’s all set out, just follow the Rules. Public Servants on high incomes with nothing to keep them amused.

NCA vs ACTPLA, and neither was able to prevent the debacle resulting from the sale of the airport.
