HDTV Outage?

Hi All,

I couldnt think of where else to post this question and while its most likely a localised problem, I thought I would put it out there and see if anyone else was / is affected.

Approx spot on 1am, I lost all HDTV signal except for SBS channels. I have also tested on a TV tuner card in my laptop and can also no longer pick up any signals when previously I have had no problems.

Is there anywhere to look up to see if there is maintenance happening on telstra tower (is that even a HDTV relay?) or something else?

Anyway, I live in an apartment in civic and I am curious if this is just me or if anyone else has experienced something similar.

That Monday the young man on the local reception advice curtly said they don’t need the public to tell them when they’re off the air as their modern technology logs all outtages. (His idea of an apology on behalf of the ABC.) Oh, then why did it take so long to come back on air.

I’ve never understood why something which is supposed to provide a service 24/7 only appears to have someone there in office hours. Very frustrating over the years when big sporting events etc have suddenly disappeared. I don’t know when this great new technology was introduced but if there aint no-one there to watch it and respond . . . At least before the modern technology you got the courtesy of transmission break message onscreen.

Anyway, looks like everything but SBS is gone again tonight, just after 1am same as before. I didn’t notice a crawler but I was busy so maybe missed it.

It was so that equipment for digital radio broadcasts could be installed. As far as I know, there will be a couple more outages overnight in the coming days.

That might explain Canberra but Bomballa, Yass and Cooma won’t be getting DAB+ trials and radio off Canberra’s translators was still working during the TV outage.

A couple of months I tried to ring the ABC in Canberra about a frozen signal during the screening of ‘Samson & Delilah’. Recall they’d spent weeks earbashing us it was coming. Delilah has just been bashed and raped and goes into a phonebox to call for help. Unfortunately, she never came back out as the image froze. She stayed in the phonebox for over an hour and counting.

Rang every number for ABC in Canberra including radio. Every single was a recorded message. “Sorry office hours are blah, blah ring back then”. ABCTV number in Sydney put me through, you guessed it ,the security guard (we’re talking about 9:30 pm here mind, not the wee small hours). They put through someone radio, who took my number and someone from ABCTV would call back ASAP. Never happened.

Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I thought it was good form to put up a banner and announcement …”We apologise for this break in our transmission and will return to our, etc, etc as soon possible”. No these days suckers. Work it out for yourself. Just check in every half hour to see if we’re back. Better still give up and turn in.

All 7 and 9 digital channels have ‘weak or no signal’ in Woden – is it just me? Ten, ABC and SBS digital channels are working fine for me.

Would this account for the Canberra ABC HD channel playing the same news promo over and over all evening?

No, that’s because the ABC’s new 24/7 News service will be using the HD allocation soon as a separate channel. They’ve given up showing ABC1 in HD.

SC Ten advised last night that it’s transmissions in Canberra, Yass, Cooma and Bombala would cease from 1-5am for maintenance.

Given it included so many areas, about about 8 different translators, I assumed it was something being done at their play-out centre in Watson. Yet, all other channels except SBS went off air too. Down in Tuggeranong, I get FM radio off the Tuggeranong translator and that wasn’t affected.

As Saraj said, there was a banner message on half way through “Burn Notice” on Channel 10 advising that they were going to do maintenance.
I didn’t check whether analog was still working or not.
They always seem to do this servicing whenever I have insomnia.
Or maybe I only notice it when I am awake 😛

Same issue down south in Woden.
All stations bar SBS, “No Signal” message.

SD were gone too. I just happened to catch the end of the crawler and thought okay, Bega and Bombala . . . . . . . huh, us too??? You’d think planned maintenance would have gotten a little more publicity. And what was the point of starting a program a few minutes before the signal disappeared? Instead of showing the start of Burn Notice why not have a message on the screen, a full-screen message, saying the channel is about to go off air for blah-blah reasons blah-blah duration?

“I couldnt think of where else to post this question” – A TV/boradcaster forum?

“Approx spot on 1am” – Is is an approximate, or spot on? I can’t tell…

“I lost all HDTV signal” – So it was just HD channels, the SD ones were still OK?

“Is there anywhere to look up to see if there is maintenance happening on telstra tower” – As you are in Civic, don’t look directly up, you want to kind of look “over” at the tower.

There was an upgrade to service from 1am. A banner message appeared on Channel 10 just prior to this.
