He did it Otway (or how do you book a show in Canberra?)

John Otway, micro-star, “rock and roll’s greatest failure”, and subject of a recent Cannes premiered movie, is thinking about a trip to Aus. As a fan, (and friend,) of his I’m trying to get him to play Canberra. But never having been involved in something like this, how does one go about arranging a gig? Which venue is suitable (my first thought, seeing as it would probably be a solo gig, was Tilley’s.) Any help or information that could be offered at this formative stage would be most welcomed.

John Otway, (born 2 October 1952, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England) is an English singer-songwriter who has built a sizeable cult audience through extensive touring, a surreal sense of humour and a self-deprecating underdog persona.

The Harmonie German Club is a good venue, as is the National Press Club. Both get the occasional international act, although the focus is very much blues and jazz.

Get in touch with the Canberra Musician’s Club, they put on gigs at a full range of venues and would tee up everything you needed.

Tilley’s is a perfect venue but they’ve hardly run any shows there for years.
Easier to trade off the cabaret aesthetic to sell breakfasts and let that perfect stage gather dust.
