While recent snow has been good news for resort operators in the lead up to the traditional season opening long weekend, it has caused problems on the road.
Recent storms across Kosciuszko National Park have seen snowfalls in excess of half a metre, forcing the early closure of several roads and visitor areas.
Drivers travelling to the snowfields for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend are expected to still be able to use the major highways but some other key roads have been closed.
Significant snow and icy conditions have made it necessary for the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to close the following roads to ensure public safety:
- Cabramurra to Khancoban Road (KNP 5/Swampy Plain Creek Road)
- Kings Cross Road
- Long Plain Road
- Pockets Saddle Road
Additionally, other minor roads and campgrounds that are usually open until the Queen’s Birthday long weekend including those in the High Plains, Tantangara, Long Plain and Blue Waterholes areas have now closed for the winter period due to unsuitable conditions.
Thredbo Resort has received more than 125 cm of fresh snow in the past week, setting the scene for the best start to the season in more than 20 years.

“In my many years living and working in Thredbo, I have never seen the village so covered in snow ahead of the June long weekend,” Thredbo Resort general manager Stuart Diver said.
“The entire Thredbo community is really excited to see such a strong start to winter 2022. It’s great to see such positive energy amongst our staff and community ready to welcome guests back to the mountains this weekend.”
Perisher has had almost 100 cm of snow in the same period, with another 75 cm predicted in the next seven days.
Razed by the Black Summer bushfires, Mount Selwyn Snow Resort is hoping for a bumper season when it reopens for the first time in more than two years on 2 July.
A brand new Selwyn Centre houses all guest facilities and services, while the resort will also feature expanded ski and snowboard hire, enhanced food and drink offerings and all-new snow-making and lift infrastructure.
It’s expecting snowfalls of up to 24 cm over the next fortnight.
NPWS is asking motorists heading into the Snowy Mountains to respect the road closures and not enter the closed areas in Kosciuszko National Park. The latest updates on Kosciuszko National Park alerts are available online.
Adventurers planning activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and backcountry skiing and snowboarding should also complete a Trip Intention Form and ensure they have suitable skills and equipment.
Visitors are reminded to always check the NPWS website for up-to-date information, alerts and closures.
