I remember as a kid, the Police had Dope detection equipment fitted to chopppers, and would regularly hover over properties in Wamboin for hours on end at night. Someone could have been spinning us kids a Furphy back then, but maybe it was true, and the LCD detectors are now being used, judging by the types of drop kicks that hang around Lanyon Valley.

Oops. I Meant LSD…..and LCD too I guess.

It was flying quite high over the Kambah area when I peered out the window to see where it was about 1am-ish. It did a few passes lasting about 10mins then disappeared..

It was nothing much, just a patrol from 8th RAR calling in helicopter gunships and a dust off, after being ambushed by a superior force of VC from D445 Battalion on the outskirts of Gordon at dusk.

Heard it 7 times over Lanyon, between 12:30 and 2am. Strange things is would always pass south over the east side of the valley and then north over the west side so it was hardly random.

Aliens…. Definitely Aliens, I mean if I was an Alien, I’d be in a helicopter, thats why they had the sniffer dogs out, maybe an alien landed….

Nothing to see here… Move along people, oiy you with the camera phone give that here! No you can’t go that way, I don’t care if you always go that way home, this is Canberra, there will be another way there!

I was driving home to Gordon at about 12:30 am that night and there was a police car sitting on the round about seemed to be on the look out for something/someone also passed another one of two cops on my way around near the Gordon IGA…. And heard the helicopter for hours on end… I had a look and thought maybe they had a spotlight out looking for someone but it just seemed to be hovering around

Do you know if that was in Mackney Place Gordon as well with the police and sniffer dogs?

Not sure of the address, just that she was at a friend’s place in Gordon.

We’re in Griffith and have noticed the buzz of a helicopter for an extended period, late at night, a couple of times in the last few weeks. It’s not in your head.

I’m in Garran and didn’t hear the helicopter so not likely patient transfer.

Ditto, though I’ve more or less tuned it out by now.

Might be looking for ‘indoor gardens’, do the cops in Canberra use helicopters? with FLIR?

My first thought was southcare, until the noise returned several times, and my thoughts turned to that. A friend who used to live on a cattle farm told me of police doing low-flying passes with FLIR-style sensors, which would spook the cattle. Even after numerous complaints, they still persist in their search, day or night.

Heard it in Banks as well. My sister saw police with sniffer dogs out in Gordon as well around 1.30am, so would assume they were looking for someone/something?

Do you know if that was in Mackney Place Gordon as well with the police and sniffer dogs. I looked out the window around that time and saw two people with flouro vests on and torches but thought they were checking out a blocked drain. I definitely heard the helicopter and saw it circling around. Must have been something bad for all the commotion!

It was over the inner north around midnight. It was a loud one.
I hope they got what they wanted and don’t come back.

Heard it here too. Not going anywhere, just round and round.

Maybe it’s Julia and the death squads rooting out Kev supporters?

aliens, not a helicopter?

If it was going back and forth over and over as the OP actually said it wouldn’t be the Southcare chopper unless there was a major bus prang or something close by.

The red SES chopper has been operating around Canberra recently I think, perhaps they were doing night exercises.

I’d hazard a guess and say the Careflight ‘copper was in full flight – probably transporting some poor sod from the snow fields. I hope whoever they rescued, it turned out to be a good news story. Saturday and Sunday nights seem to be Careflight’s peak period, with all the weekend warriors out and about.

South care. flipping patients to the hospital would be my guess
