Help for finding a dentist who will consider full extraction

Hi

My partner has had major gum disease and teeth loss, combined with trigeminal neuralgia and TMJ for over 7 years.

Every time we go to a dentist, we’ve been told that the remaining teeth are “fine” to stay in, but after the fourth occasion that the “perfectly fine” teeth have started to fall out, we’re at wit’s end and he just wants the lot of them out.

We’ve tried Modern Dentistry, The Smile Lounge, Braddon Surgical Centre and Dr Bannano (who was great, but still wouldn’t remove clearly looking diseased teeth because the referring dentist hadn’t allowed it).

He doesn’t want implants (gum does not have enough integrity) and we’re aware of our overseas options.
Considering all this, are there any suggestions for dentists in Canberra who are willing?

Funny you ask – I had a tooth extracted yesterday and had a great experience at Greenway Dental in Tuggerenong with Eric Kropinak. I was in extreme pain due to a cracked tooth, I could hardly function and was only sleeping 4 hours a night. It was shooting pain all the way down to my legs and my gums were stinging. I called up in the morning he was able fit me in pretty much right away. The tooth was too far gone so he recommended I get it extracted rather than root canal (I was surprised as from what I have heard a lot of dentists recommend root canal even though there is little chance the tooth will come good). He was able to fit me in later on that day and after 30 minutes the tooth was out. I experienced no pain at all apart from a slight prick when the aesthetic needle went in. I was given printed instructions on what to do after the extraction, some mouth wash and spare gauze for my mouth to save me going to the chemist.

I was only charged $320 for everything – including the consultation, xray and tooth extraction with aesthetic. After private health I only paid $112! Today I feel no pain at all and couldn’t be happier with the outcome and their service. A team of great people, highly recommended!

Thank you everyone for your thoughtful comments. You’ve given us both a lot of food for thought.

Dr Carmelo Bonanno in Woden is the best dentist for extraction (it is all he does). He is gentle, and kind and recommended for people who have phobia’s of dental work (not that you suffer that, but for future) I would recommend him every day of the week!

I recommend Dr Long Fang (real name) at TLC in Dickson. Very professional, quick, painless and very well priced.

Sooo….You eat healing crystals for fresh breath and stop plaque build-up with preventative Reiki? Followed by a high colonic to strengthen enamel and make teeth whiter delivered by Mrs Marsh herself?

I’ve been told that Fiona Archibald from Civic Gentle Dental Care is a very skilled and caring dentist.

It might be worth giving her a call to see if she will perform a full extraction.

Dr Andre Viljoen. Did full extraction (well left 9 behind) and also the dentures for my husband. Not cheap but very professional and friendly. Website – http://www.andreviljoen.com.au/

Fairly big ramifications from having all your teeth removed and getting used to a denture can be tough. Took my husband about a year to adjust fully.

I went to Prevenative dental for a lot of work, I found them friendly, caring, and not patronising at all.

I thought they gave all the info I needed.

I would agree, they do charge like stampede of wounded bulls.

If your partner can stand a dentist with a horrid bedside manner, they could give Dr Uren in Queanbeyan a go.

He is (or at least was last time I had cause to see him) very cheap.

My feeling is that he would do as he was asked.

Hey, I like that holistic approach. Would dovetail nicely with my soon-to-be-announced Dental Reiki services, specialising in needle-less anasthetic processes. With our advanced hand waving techniques, incorporating the newest 1cm range of direct injection Reiki energy, any pain that you ‘perceive’ to be feeling during an extraction or filling has been dealt with by the forces of nature and cannot possibly exist in the real sense. The more you believe in Reiki and its ilk the less you will feel, it’s really that simple.

Pish posh.

Only my combination of iridology and reflexology can possibly work.

I can recommend the one at the Ginninderra medical centre. Especially the woman (sorry, bad with names).

I would not go back to Preventive Dental in Deakin. They are rude, patronising, don’t give proper info and try to steer you towards the most expensive options when their normal fees are already well above average. Probably great if you have one precious tooth that needs lots of TLC, but definitely not if you have a mouthful of them.

Mr Ate recently had a lot of dental work done as he had been too scared over the last 8yrs to visit one and it had gotten to the point he couldnt put it off any more. We went to Dr Rick Worboys in Belconnen on reccommendation from a friend. He was fantastic, reasonably priced, honest and was able to calm the nerves of my very anxious man. I highly reccomend him. Mr Ate wont leave it 8yrs in between visits now.

Reiki aside, it is a well known fact that bad dental care and/or dental/gum problems can lead to significant heart problems, potentially to lung disease, diabetes and possibly low birth weights in children of those with gum disease.

I hope you brush your teeth.

Have you tried Prevenative Dental Care?

I wouldn’t recommend them for people with no dental issues as they charge like a wounded bull, but they helped my father save his teeth. After decades of not caring for his teeth (going back to childhood), they were on the verge of causing major dental problems, including falling out altogether. Preventative Dental managed to reverse enough of the damage so that he has years of issue-free chomping ahead of him!

While it was not the same problem as mentioned by the OP, they may be able to help.

I have heard good things about Dr Da Cruz in Queanbeyan. http://www.wholisticdentistry.com.au/
Recommended to me but have not yet got to going there. Website is very informative. I am informed that this dentist has people coming from all over the world to see him. Anyway, might be worth calling for a chat to see if they can assist. Good luck.

Good ‘ol Collingwood for ever
