Sports Minister Andrew Barr is getting behind the new Australian Baseball League (ABL) team the Canberra Cavalry.

With the ABL beginning this year we also have a new opportunity for Canberrans to compete in sport at the national level.

This will provide even more choice in sport for Canberrans and further raise the profile of Canberra as a sporting and tourism destination.

The ACT Government has supported the Cavalry with improvements at Narrabundah Ballpark including lighting upgrades, an electronic scoreboard and improved player facilities.

The Government will also provide about $30,000 per year in sponsorship and a one-off $45,000 to help establish the team.

Until the dozing old bastards at Cricket Australia extract their digits and give us a 20-20 team in a real national league this could be a fun way to get a sports fix through summer.

How long will it be, if they start losing games, before someone nicknames them the Canberra Calvarys???

If the organisers can a decent atmosphere complete with hot dog vendors, etc, it might be a winner.

At least that’s better than the Adelaide Bite! I can’t wait for this fad of stupid team names to lose their appeal with marketing gurus.

Victory and Heart have to be two of the worst names going in Australian sport at the moment.

In that context Cavalry is a massive win!

We need a proper cricket field with lighting first. Bring on the new second Canberra Stadium

I’ve been out of the ACT cricket scene for a few years now but I can tell that we are not going to get another shot at the domestic one day competion and will never have a first class Sheffield Shield side.

Back in the late 90s ther ACT had a side that would have been very competitive at first class level. This spooked a lot of the other states who pretty quickly voted the ACT out of the one day competition. ACT cricket then suffered financially and rolled over to the ACA who decreed that ACT would be a feeder to other states, thus we have a State 2nd XI side and nothing more.

Nothing has changed. Our talented players all disappear off to other states at the ages of about 20 and we never see them again, which is fair enough as they’ll never get the exposure they need to progress further in the game if they stay in Canberra.

If CA had any forthought they allow the ACT limited first class status, ie, vs touring teams, for a few years, and then allow the ACT to enter the Sheffield Shield on a limited basis, similiar to how Tasmania entered the competition in 1977.

The prospect of limited first class fixtures would draw fringe players away from other states and would encourage home grown players to stay. This would build up our player strength so that when the CAT did enter the domestic four day comp, they would be competitive.

But it won’t happen.

There you go again.
Confusing the ACA by using logic 😉

Exactly the same story with the Canberra Kookaburras/Vikings

Canberra Golgotha has a much better ring.
