When Canberrans are asked what events they’d like to have in town for the 2013 Centenary of Canberra celebrations the answer is often along the lines of Red Bull Pylon Racing, or a cricket test match.

While there’s still time to work on the program Our Chiefly Leader has this day announced that we’re getting the Women’s Australian Open at the Royal Canberra Golf Club.

“This four day championship, during Canberra’s 100th birthday year, will attract many of the world’s best female golfers and bring strong interstate crowds to Canberra.

“The Women’s Open will also enhance Canberra’s reputation as an international sporting destination while promoting the centenary celebrations to millions of television viewers around Australia, across Asia and the northern hemisphere.

“The ACT Government looks forward to working with Golf Australia and Royal Canberra to develop a memorable championship in 2013,” Mr Stanhope said.

Stephen Pitt, CEO of Golf Australia, agreed with the Chief Minister saying “to host the Open in Canberra during the centenary of our nation’s capital is a significant drawcard for the game, showcasing elite golfers, emerging golfers and inspiring even more Australians to take up golf.

“The championship attracts some of the world’s best female golfers and Golf Australia is delightedRoyal Canberra will host the Open as part of a significant year of celebration for Canberra and Australia,” Mr Pitt said.

One supposes there are indeed people out there who like watching golf (as opposed to a good walk with a modicum of competition).

or Paula Creamer

I’m there if Natalie Gulbis is playing

I would have preferred either Air Racing or the Birdman Rally.

Lady golfers can go screw each other. Only then will I be interested.

Watch golf? Not while these’s paint drying somehwere…

Nope I still want Red Bull Pylon Racing…

That would be awesome…

Keep dreaming, any form of Motor/internal combustion engined type sport will continue to be ostracised by this government. I still have not forgiven them for the GMC.

What other event do we have other than Floriade that pulles the numbers into the town like that did??

Celebration fail.

This is excellent!
Can’t wait to see it!

I think its great and will be out there to watch for sure. Australia has some great women golfers and to have the chance to see them in Canberra is fantastic.
