ACT Policing has arrested an 18-year-old man and charged him with intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm, following an incident in Civic on Sunday morning.
Police will allege that around 5.30am on the corner of Northbourne Avenue and Alinga Street in Civic, the alleged offender callously struck the 41-year-old Irish tourist in the face, causing the victim to fall to the ground, resulting in an immediate loss of consciousness and a severe head injury.
The victim remains in a critical condition in The Canberra Hospital.
Detectives executed a search warrant on a Franklin residence last night (Monday, July 25) and seized a number of items as evidence. The alleged offender, who was also at the house, was taken into custody and will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Tuesday, July 26).
Police are continuing to seek witnesses to the incident. Anyone who may have seen the victim with a group of men outside the Quick and Go convenience store in Civic, or witnessed the alleged assault, are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.
